Mr Harrison's accounts of the Elizabethan playhouse and the development of Shakespeare's style are erudite and illuminating. Contains also revealing excerpts from Shakespearean criticism through the centuries (Dryden, Pope, Dr Jonhson, Coleridge). Excellent complement to Mr Bryson's book. Be sure to get (post-)1954 edition (the year of last revision, first published in 1939). Very little dated. Excellent bibliography of scholarly editions of original documents (Henslowe's Diary and Papers, the volumes edited by E. K. Chambers, Mr Harrison's own Elizabethan Journals, and others).… (més)

This was both well written and humorous in presenting its very interesting content. Bryson proves that Shakespeare probably wrote all that is attributed to him and probably more. Bryson tells us why the theories that others wrote some or all of what is credited to Shakespeare have no proof to support them. Since I have met him, I personally enjoyed his criticism of Marc Rylance. ( )

Es ist bekannt, dass über Will Shkasp so gut wie nichts bekannt ist, außer seinen Werken. Grund genug also, zu spekulieren bzw. die wilden Spekulationen Revue passieren zu lassen. Spannender Einstieg und vor allem ein hervorragendes Eintauchen in die Zeit, in der Shakespeare geschrieben und geschauspielert hat. London war die Metropole schlechthin damals - und Theater mussten ausgelastet sein, Neues bieten, neben Dramen waren auch andere Vorstellungen üblich, härteste Konkurrenz also, gegen die sich Shakespeare durchsetzten musste. Er hatte Feinde, üble sogar, die ihm in Testamenten noch übel wollten. Ein sicheres Zeichen für seinen Erfolg.

Bücher bzw. das Papier war kostbar damals - und deshalb wurde eng, ohne Absätze geschrieben - und klein gesetzt, die Pest schwebte über dem Leben, andauernd, London war eine pulsierende Stadt, die nach dem Sieg über die Spanier zur Metropole eines Weltreiches emporsteigen sollte. Katholiken wurden verfolgt, kamen über die Hintertür ins Land, missionierten, Menschen wurden noch ausgeweidet, bei lebendigem Leib, eine Strafe, die selbst härteste Brüller nicht mehr sehen wollten. Die Menschheit in Knechtschaft von Kirche und den Oberen, bettelnd um etwas Gnade.

Gerne kommt man zurück ins Heute - und umso größer, unbegreiflicher ist die Leistung von Shakespeare.

Ja, Will kürzte seinen Namen oft oder eigentlich immer ab, um nicht zu viel Papier zu verschwenden. Er spielte in seinen Stücken nie die tragenden Rollen, war anwesend, steuernd, mittendrin, eine Ahnung bekommend, was gesagt werden kann - und beeindruckt. Ein Beobachter seiner selbst und der neuen Ideen.

Short, lively biography of a man about whom very little is known. Bryson does a fine job explaining what little is known, what is a likely guess, what is a reasonable speculation — and then also tears up the many falsehoods including a final chapter poking holes in the various theories that someone else other than Shakespeare actually wrote all the stuff. You don’t have to know much of anything about the plays to read this book, but conversely you won’t really learn anything about them either, this is very much a biography not an explication of the works themselves. ( )

Not bad. If you like Bryson's other stuff and are remotely interested in Shakespearian stuff, you'll like this.

This book delivers on what it promises to do provide a concise and accessible history of William Shakespeare in less than 200 pages. Bryson‘s writing is very accessible informative and entertaining. You can tell he’s clearly read a lot of the scholarship and distilled it down to the high points that the average reader can enjoy. At the end he also takes on the conspiracy theories of what are known to be the anti-Stratfordists — those who believe Shakespeare did not write Shakespeare. Highly recommend ( )

We don't know if [Shakespeare] ever left England. We don't know who his principal companions were or how he amused himself. His sexuality is an irreconcilable mystery. On only a handful of days in his life can we say with complete certainty where he was. . . . For the rest, he is a kind of literary equivalent of an electron—forever there and not there.
In fact it cannot be emphasized too strenuously that there is nothing—not a scrap, not a mote—that gives any certain insight into Shakespeare's feelings or beliefs as a private person. We can know only what came out of his work, never what went into it.
One variation [of bearbaiting] was to put a chimpanzee on the back of a horse and let the dogs go for both together. The sight of a screeching ape clinging for dear life to a bucking horse while dogs leaped at it from below was considered about as rich an amusement as public life could offer. That an audience that could be moved to tears one day by a performance of Doctor Faustus could return the next to the same space and be just as entertained by the frantic deaths of helpless animals may say as much about the age as any single statement could.
[I]t needs to be said that nearly all of the anti-Shakespeare sentiment—actually all of it, every bit—involves manipulative scholarship or sweeping misstatements of fact.
"In some ways the records are extremely good," Thomas told me. "Sheepskin is a marvellously durable medium, though it has to be treated with some care. Whereas ink soaks into the fibres on paper, on sheepskin it stays on the surface, rather like chalk on a blackboard, and so can be rubbed away comparatively easily. Sixteenth-century paper was of good quality ... It was made of rags and was virtually acid free, so it has lasted very well." ... Paper and parchment were expensive, so no space was wasted. There were no gaps between paragraphs - indeed, no paragraphs.
