It's the second of a planned trilogy, and yet it managed to not fall into the Middle Book Chasm as badly as some (*cough* Two Towers *cough*). The distance yet to cover between the depressing present day and the exultant memory of the past still seems pretty great; I'm hoping Rothfuss has a hell of a finish in mind, because he's set up a fun world and an intriguing protagonist.

That said, some of the transitions between locations and chapters seemed a bit abrupt. Getting from the University to the Maer's service seemed overly, quick, and the unanswered question of why the resident arcanist, Caudicus, was trying to kill the Maer felt like a missed loose end. Maybe I'll be wrong, and it'll be included in the conclusion. The time spent in Fae and the nonchalance with which everyone around him accepts his story as true seemed a little contrived; his time in Ademre read like it took a long time, and when he then said it had only been two months, it startled me. But these were minor nits.

Both this one and its predecessor, The Name of the Wind, read a bit like Stephen Brust to me, mostly in the careful attention to music and food. Fun stuff! ( )

This series is the best sword and sorcery story I have read in years. Sadly, the third book isn't out yet and there is no release date anywhere. ( )

I switched back & forth between the Kindle and Audible versions of this and it STILL felt like it took me forever to get through. I like the story & Rothfuss' style overall, but with this book in particular I felt like the story was just treading water & not progressing at all - so many tangents it felt like three or four different epics contained within one book cover. But I have to admit to my bias, which is that if I don't finish a book in a week or less I feel somewhat held hostage by it, and that's my problem & not the book's.

This was actually not that bad except for pages 400-850. Everything else was great. I read The Name of the Wind in January and it's most likely going to be in my top favourite book I read in 2018, but the middle of this dragged, and dragged, and dragged. While a flew through this book, I was just so bored until about page 850. Then it ended sort of okay. The intermissions were a bit annoying. I'm not interested in what's happening around the tale Kvothe is telling and I'm really too interested in there being a plot and problems in the intermission world. ( )

Rothfuss takes to the Hero’s Journey with a passion and depth that routinely turns the trite into the transcendent.

Rothfuss works all the well-worn conventions of the genre, with a shadow cloak here and a stinging sword there and lots of wizardry throughout, blending a thoroughly prosaic prose style with the heft-of-tome ambitions of a William T. Vollmann. This is a great big book indeed, but not much happens—which, to judge by the success of its predecessor, will faze readers not a whit.

To my patient fans, for reading the blog and telling me what they really want is an excellent book, even if it takes a little longer.

To my clever beta readers, for their invaluable help and toleration of my paranoid secrecy.

To my fabulous agent, for keeping the wolves from the door in more ways than one.

To my wise editor, for giving me the time and space to write a book that fills me with pride.

To my loving family, for supporting me and reminding me that leaving the house every once in a while is a good thing.

To my understanding girlfriend, for not leaving me when the stress of endless revision made me frothy and monstrous.

To my sweet baby, for loving his daddy even though I have to go away and write all the time. Even when we're having a really great time. Even when we're talking about ducks.
