Incredible book but even better story about the author and the book itself. It's hard to believe when people think of war crimes in ww2 everyone assumes it's Germany and the concentration camps you're talking about but the Japanese War Crimes were just as, if not more, sadistic than the Nazis. It's hard to imagine this being such recent history. The author of this book actually becomes a part of the story because she committed suicide about 7 years after finishing this book. She was working on another book about another Japanese war crime, the Battan Death March. She started deteriorating fairly quickly and killed herself. Her husband writes an epilogue to finish the book and it's really interesting and so tragic. I also didn't know the lengths Japan was currently going to try and whitewash this part of history and just like they are Holocaust deniers, they are also many people who say the Rape of Nanking didn't happen, or didn't happen to the extent that it did. I hope this book serves the purpose of opening peoples eyes to the brutal truth that the Japanese military did to Chinese soldiers and civilians. 5 stars for sure. The author has an autobiography written about her and I'm interested in reading that too. ( )

The Rape of Nanking
by Iris Chang
If you read this book and don't feel anything, you are truly heartless. This is a very hard book to read but it needs to be read! People need to know! How can people do this to others? Chang addressed this a bit when she talks about how the Japanese soldiers themselves were treated in their own army. Like they were less than dirt. They were slapped and beat constantly for no reason. So when they had a chance to release their bent up rage on someone they thought was inferior to them, they had no problem doing so.
This is a horrific book but a necessary book. Apparently the author felt the anguish with every person she interviewed. She killed herself in 2004 because she was so depressed. She took all her books to heart and really lived them. 😑 ( )

This was a difficult read. Iris Chang did a fantastic job at depicting some of the most horrific acts of evil. ( )

A great non-fiction read about the atrocities committed in Nanking (Beijing) by the Japanese. Although the atrocities committed are just as bad as those committed during the Jewish Holocaust, there is little writing about this event or little historical study. Besides documenting the atrocities, Chang did a good job of trying to make sense of the why the Japanese acted in such a morally bankrupt manner and why the rest of the world did little to see that responsible individuals were brought to justice. 338 pages ( )

In some ways I wish I'd have read this by paper copy not audiobook as it's impossible to skim the most nausea-inducing, sickening things by audiobook. I don't really think this is a book you like or enjoy. It's something you read to get information. It was very thorough, and more people should know about the Japanese atrocities in Nanking, but I can't say I liked the book. It was worth reading, but not enjoyable. ( )
