When this came out in the nineties, this would probably have been described as a book about an overprotective parent, but it's clearly more a case of emotional incest. Lois is prevented from interacting with children her age because her mother insists that (seven-year-old!) Lois be her constant company and emotional support. As a book about Lois learning to be more courageous and to rebel against her mother's unfair dependence on her, it's nicely done, but for an adult reader, it's hard not to feel saddened and a little creeped-out by the deeper issues at play. Everyone in the second grade always teases Lois Waller for acting like a baby. And now Lois really feels like a baby. Ever since her grandmother died, Lois' mother has treated her that way. Mrs. Waller barely lets Lois out of her sight. Then Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield have a sleepover party, and Mrs. Waller won't let Lois go. Lois decides enough is enough! She wants to be part of the fun, so she goes to the party anyway. Will Lois end up in big trouble -- or will Mrs. Waller see that Lois is growing up? No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
