Joan of Arc was a young woman, against everyone’s judgment went into battle on behalf of her country. This book gives insight on what my have been and essential detail leading Joan into battle. Joan was seen to be heretic. Joan was a child and built as such. However she led and was an inspiration to an army of more than a thousand men. Many did neither share nor understood Joan’s practices and believed them to be acts of witchcraft. This would be the cause of her death in her teenage years. This book is intended for a young audience, personally I would recommend first or second grade reading level. In this entire book shows the power of beliefs. ( )

Joan of Arc: Heroine of France is a book that can used in a classroom to create a timeline of the events of Joan of Arc’s life. The book retells Joan of Arc’s life in chronological from when she was thirteen until her untimely death. Throughout the book the author gives the exact dates of when certain events in Joan’s life took place. She was only seventeen when her life ended tragically. With her faith in god and with people’s faith in her she was able to make history by leading Dauphin Charles to Rheims to be crowned king of France. The author often referred to angels and the “King of Heaven.” Before reading this book I had no idea that much of Joan of arc’s journey was so religiously driven. The book is beautifully illustrated, almost as if it were illustrated to be an animation. Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was very simple and easy to follow because of the author’s dating of events. As someone who grew up in catholic schools but felt little attachment to the religion itself, Joan of Arc has always been an intriguing story. To an outsider, the tale of a young girl who hears voices telling her to bring down the English could easily be misinterpreted as some sort of mental illness. But, to an observant young catholic, the story can be much more than that, destiny calling. Either way, it is an exciting tale of a war hero that deserves reader's familiarity.

Ann Tompert and Michael Garland's Joan of Arc: Heroine of France has a few things going for it. First, in what is essentially an action adventure story, the heroine is a female. While that may not seem like a huge deal, to young female readers, it very well could be. Secondly, with boundless tradition and folklore to draw from, the story is quite rich in detail. However, the downfall of the book is the way in which the story is communicated to the reader. Instead of creating a fantastic world, Tompert talks of angels and the voice of the heavens as if they are normal pieces of the world.

Garland's illustration falls under similar criticism. Though I did appreciate his use of both realistic scenery and cartoonish characters, the illustration of Joan left a little to be desired. Each time the heroin is pictured, she has what I perceived to be a very confused look on her face. Perhaps that is the proper response to the situation, however, it does not mesh well with the war-hero through-line.

Joan of Arc: Heroine of France is a solid option for young readers interested in something action-tinged and provides a decent historical backdrop for education purposes. Interested parties could certainly do worse, but they could probably do better, as well. ( )

This cartoon-like version is wonderful. I would definitely read this version to a second or third grade class. I would recommend this as reference for a biography project. I think it is important for every person to know about Joan of Arc because she truly proved that women can do anything men can do and more. ( )
