This is must have in your science library, the ground breaking work of Franz Cumont shows that the ceremonies and dogma of Christianity have roots in other religions, notably the Roman version of a Mithra, originally a Persian god. The last supper, afterlife of Christ, etc are show in this archeology. This is the first English language translation edition, taken from the second revised French Edition, published one year after the first publication in 1902. Cumont suffered greatly for this work, as he was unable to gain full professorial status due to powerful religious leader opposition. However, he came to USA and gained considerable fame. This work includes a fold out map and many illustrations. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
First published in 1956, this seminal study, by the great Belgian scholar Franz Cumont, remains the definitive coverage of a great ideological struggle between the West and the Orient in the first centuries of the Christian era. Mithraism, a mystery religion originating in Persia, spread rapidly through the Roman Empire, and achieved such strength that Europe almost became Mithraic. Dr. Cumont, the world's' greatest authority on aspects of classical religions, here discusses the origins of this colourful oriental religion, and its association with the Roman army. Then utilizing fragmentary monuments and texts, in one of the greatest feats of scholarly detection, he reconstructs the mystery teachings and secret doctrines, the hidden organization and cult of Mithra. This volume includes 70 illustrations. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
