Maribeth Boelts shares the story many of us has had of feeling left out of the new trend at school. Main character Jeremy lives with his grandma and is desperate for the new pair of shoes that is all the rage, black high tops with two white stripes, but grandma says they only have money for what he needs not what he wants. He feels like he has a stroke of luck when they find a pair at the thrift store, but they are too small. He says he doesn't care but he can't be the fastest runner if he keeps wishing his toes fall off.

This story compassionately shows a look into the life of a kid who usually only gets needs instead of wants and also shows how empathetic and compassionate kids can be too!

Great realistic fiction book to teach students lessons about kindness and serving others. This will also teach how important friendship is. Great book and great quality. ( )

Jeremy wanted a pair of black high tops as many students in his class had them, but his grandma explains that they are not able to afford them as he had to buy winter boots. He was persistent and went to numerous thrift stores to find those shoes, but eventually, realizes that there are things much more important than having new shoes. This would be a great book for kindergarten to early elementary students. There are themes of generosity, selflessness, and friendship in this book. ( )

For intermediate readers. A boy realizes that generosity and friendship is more important than what everyone else has. The main character gives his dream shoes to a kid who was kind to him and never made fun of his shoes. They become friends. It shows that material things and what we want can sometimes skew our perspective of what is truly important. ( )

Jeremy really wants a pair of black, high-top shoes. His Grandma tells him that they can’t afford the expensive shoes because he needs winter boots. When Jeremy’s old shoes break, his guidance counselor gives him a pair of shoes that everyone makes fun of–except Antonio. Jeremy goes to the thrift stores and finds a pair of those black, high-top shoes, but they are too small. At school, Jeremy notices that Antonio’s shoes are duct taped together at recess. Jeremy eventually decides to give his shoes to Antonio. When it snows, Jeremy remembers that he has new boots. ( )
