The blockbuster bestseller that kickstarted a new genre--the medical thriller. They called it "minor surgery," but Nancy Greenly, Sean Berman and a dozen others--all admitted to Boston Memorial Hospital for routine procedures--were victims of the same inexplicable, hideous tragedy on the operating table. They never woke up. Susan Wheeler is a third-year medical student working as a trainee at Boston Memorial Hospital. Two patients during her residency mysteriously go into comas immediately after their operations due to complications from anesthesia. Susan begins to investigate the causes behind both of these alarming comas and discovers the oxygen line in Operating Room 8 has been tampered with to induce carbon monoxide poisoning. Then Susan discovers the evil nature of the Jefferson Institute, an intensive care facility where patients are suspended from the ceiling and kept alive until they can be harvested for healthy organs. Is she a participant in--or a victim of--a large-scale black market dealing in human organs?… (més)

This book sprung to mind as one I read back in the 80s. It was a good medical thriller that entertained me for a few days, as I remember. The fact that I didn't remember it until another medical thriller jared lose the memory indicates to me that it wasn't one of the best books I've read. Then, of course, I'm more inclined to eco-lit. Read when first published. Excellent and down right scary.

Coma tells the story of Susan a medical student whom has just started working at a hospital and stumbles upon a mystery. At points this book is extremely wordy taking the focus away from the storyline as well as shifting the focus to other things mostly a male dominated society where females were seen as weak and sexualized. It is not until the reader gets towards the end of the book, that the storyline picks up and villain of the story is guessed. This however is less fun as several of the characters have long descriptions as to what they are doing. The book then just ends without giving the reader closer as to what happens. If it were not for the last half of the book, this would of been a 2 star review. ( )

The plot becomes interesting near the end (though the current description on Goodreads contains a complete spoiler for it), but it’s slow-moving until then and the characters and dialog made me cringe over and over. The silliest part is the protagonist’s tendency to vocalize sensitive and verbose self-psychoanalysis to other characters who she’s just met and has no reason to trust. The romance is also very forced. ( )

Coma is a medical thriller/suspense novel by Robin Cook.

It's of his usual standard of writing and the main protagonist is a female medical student who meets a patient who later becomes comatose, brain dead, during a routine surgical operation.

Good building of suspense and mystery although I did find the ending a little abrupt. ( )
