An entertaining mystery that is dampened by unfortunate racial epithets towards Asian-Americans which we do not use anymore. I'll add that the resolution is more Deus ex machina than Nancy's logic saves the day, and I greatly prefer the latter. ( )

Teenaged sleuth Nancy Drew returns in this sixth mystery novel devoted to her adventures, this time confronting a number of puzzling mysteries centered around the eponymous Red Gate Farm. When Nancy and her two good friends, Bess and George, go shopping in a nearby city, they are intrigued by a particular fragrance in an Oriental perfume shop, and insist on buying it, even when the saleslady is reluctant to sell it to them. On the train ride home, an accident with the perfume leaves the girls drenched in the stuff, leading a complete stranger to approach Nancy and ask for word from "the chief." After this strange encounter, the girls have their hands full dealing with Millie Burd, a young farm girl come to the city to find work, in order to help her grandmother keep her farm. Hoping to help their new friend, who has had no luck in her job hunt, the girls arrange to spend some time at Red Gate Farm as paying boarders. Here they encounter the strange Black Snake Colony, a supposed nature cult renting part of the farm. The nighttime rituals of the group provide quite a spectacle, but are they simply nature lovers, or is something more sinister going on...?

This being a Nancy Drew novel, the answer is clearly the latter, and our intrepid heroine loses no time in diving in, soon finding that her mysterious experiences with the Oriental perfume are related to The Secret of Red Gate Farm. I read the original 1931 version of the book, reprinted in facsimile by Applewood Books, and the cover artwork by Russell H. Tandy - long-time illustrator of the original series - had me doing a double-take. The white-sheet-clad figures on the front immediately made me think of the Ku Klux Klan, who would have been active at the time of publication, but as it turns out, they are members of the aforementioned nature cult, out and about enacting their sham rituals on the hillside, in order to convince the local country folk that they are eccentric cultists, rather than a ring of counterfeiters. Leaving aside that issue, I found this an enjoyable addition to the series, although the developments were telegraphed ahead of time so thoroughly that little of it was a surprise. It was a surprise, on the other hand, to see that although one of the villains was a mixed-race Asian girl named Yvonne Wong, there was no overt racism directed at her. The narrative isn't complimentary, of course - Nancy thinks she is flashy and ill-bred, as her female adversaries inevitably are - but there is no commentary specifically related to her background. This was a pleasant anomaly, as I find that these original Nancy Drew titles have far more objectionable content that the revised versions from the 1950s and 60s - versions still available today. All in all, a fun little romp, recommended to fans of Nancy Drew. ( )

Nancy is not investigating the Ku Klux Klan, instead it is a "nature cult" that is renting outlying property attached to the struggling Red Gate Farm. Cover confusion aside, this was a pretty solid book and, even though one of our villains is half-Chinese, there isn't any reflexive racism. Progress??! I think so.

On a shopping trip Nancy, George and Bess are looking for a new perfume and think they've found it in an import shop near the train station. With reluctance, the shop girl sells them a bottle for the exorbitant price of $3! Wearing the scent, Nancy is approached by a mysterious man and mistaken for a message-bearer. What is going on? Meanwhile, the girls have befriended a timid girl named Millie who is seeking a job in the city to help support her grandmother and save the family farm which they were forced to mortgage.

Circumstances lead Nancy and friends to become paying boarders at Red Gate Farm to help Millie and her grandmother and, of course, get involved in a mystery surrounding the "Black Snake Colony", a peculiar cult whose members are sometimes seen dancing around on the hilltops at night.

Changes to this text appear to be minimal, but I never read this one growing up so I can't say for certain as I'm going by other's comment. There was a name change to Millie, a snakebite, and some minor plot and character shuffling to get with the modern 60s times.

I am surprised there were no changes made to style of the robes the cult uses. It is a plot point that the robes had to be distinctive and stand out on moonlit nights, so perhaps the editors couldn't think of an alternative to pointy hoods and white sheets.

I'll be taking a break from Nancy until I get my hands on book seven.

I absolutely loved Nancy Drew growing up. This was a series I latched on to for dear life and never let go. Anytime my mom and I would go to antique stores, we'd peruse the Nancy Drews and add them to the collection (oftentimes my mom had to make deals with me on how many I could buy). So, while I don't remember the exact details of each and every one, the entire series was amazing and really fed my love for reading (especially novels full of suspense and mystery). Thank you, Carolyn Keene, for giving us an intelligent female character to fall in love with in Nancy Drew! ( )
