In this New York Times bestseller, retired LAPD detective Harry Bosch wants justice for a murdered production assistant -- but without his police badge, can he take down a powerful and ruthless killer? The vision has haunted him for four years -- a young woman lying crumpled in death, her hand outstretched in silent supplication. Harry Bosch was taken off the Angella Benton murder case when the production assistant's death was linked with the violent theft of two million dollars from a movie set. Both files were never closed. Now retired from the L.A.P.D., Bosch is determined to find justice for Angella. Without a badge to open doors and strike fear into the guilty, he's on his own. And even in the face of an opponent more powerful and ruthless than any he's ever encountered, Bosch is not backing down.… (més)

I can't get enough of these Harry Bosch books. This one got an extra star because Bosch does some research at the public library and it's just so, so great. The author perfectly nails what librarians say to patrons who ask them to do their internet searches for them. Which means that either Connelly asked a librarian or he totally did something like this and just wrote down what the librarian said. I love realistic depictions of libraries in fiction.
The mystery was harder for me to figure out than some of the previous titles, and for those who've been following the series there's a nice big reveal at the end. ( )

My first encounter with Harry Bosch. Written by a former reporter for "The Los Angeles Times" it is full of detail as Harry, recently retired from the LAPD seeks to resolve the murder of a young woman. We follow a maze of characters, some openly hostile to his quest.
A convincing thriller except for me the inevitable showdown between Harry and the "bad guys" strained credibility too far - but put this down to author's privilege.
Still a good gripping thriller. ( )

Although this is book 9, it's good as a stand-alone with well written story that ended nicely.

Another wonderful Harry Bosch novel. I'm enjoying these immensely. I don't read a lot of Crime Fiction, but I particularly enjoy novels with great characters and a good sense of place. For example, I really love Tony Hillerman's Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee novels because of his great depictions of the Navaho Reservation and his characters. Same with Michael Connelly's books, except the place is the moral desert of Hollywood, rather than the deserts of the Four Corners region.

Lost Light is the first novel after Harry's retirement from the LAPD, and he's investigating a cold case from earlier in his career. He's on his own, and this increases the danger for him personally - no badge, no backup. I recommend reading these books in order because of the character development that occurs as the series progresses. ( )

Lost Light, book nine of a series, is titled for a phenomenon that Harry Bosch has referred to in several earlier books of the series: when the surroundings (usually a tunnel) should be in total darkness there appears a very faint, and supposedly source less, light.
Bosch is now fifty-two-years-old and retired: still irascible, still chasing the mission that drives his life, and still in love with his ex-wife, Eleanor Wish. In Lost Light he must confront the intractable power of Homeland Security in solving a cold case. Coming out of the darkness of the case, Harry discovers his personal lost light in another's eyes.
