"Between the years 1814 and 1878 there was published in Japan a series of woodblock-printed volumes entitled "Hokusai manga, ' or 'Hokusai's sketches from life, ' which was destined to be one of the most popular art publications ever issued anywhere in the world. With its rich tapestry of life as it was lived in the boisterous Tokyo of the day and its magical evocation of the beauties of the Japanese countryside, it was an immediate best-seller in Japan, and then, upon the West's discovery of Japanese art, went on to win the hearts of people everywhere"--Jacket flap. Mine is a first edition. Although bound western-style, the pages, as in a Japanese binding, have the folds at the fore-edge. It is bound in a silk cloth, with Japanese paper endsheets, and has a Japanese title strip (on the front cover) in addition to the English title on the spine. I created a wrapper for it covered in grass green unryu, lined with a thin white paper with green leaf inclusions, with bone closures.
Michener was a dedicated collector of Japanese art (his collection is now the James A. Michener Collection, Honolulu Academy of Art), and his commentary is both scholarly and enlightening.
