Dolley was a farm girl who became a fine first lady when she married James Madison. She wore beautiful dresses, decorated her home, and threw lavish parties. Everyone talked about Dolley, and everyone loved her, too. Then war arrived at her doorstep, and Dolley had to meet challenges greater than she'd ever known. So Dolley did one thing she thought might make a difference: she saved George Washington. Not the man himself, but a portrait of him, which would surely have been destroyed by English soldiers. Don Brown once again deftly tells a little known story about a woman who made a significant contribution to American history.… (més)

DOLLEY MADISON SAVES GEORGE WASHINGTON is a very detailed retelling of Dolley Madison and her life with president James Madison. The book describes her personality, her taste and her reputation vividly. It's purpose is to tell the story of how she saved the portrait of George Washington from burning in the President's Mansion when the British came to burn the city of Washington. More facts about her life are included in the Author's Note in the back of the book. I found the book to be very educational, not only teaching about Dolley Madison, but also other figures and important events in American History. ( )

Everyone who met Dolley Madison loved her, she was great with people of all kind. She was the step in First Lady, for President Thomas Jefferson, before she was the actual First Lady when her husband, James Madison, was president in 1808. She took it upon herself to renovate the president's mansion. She wanted there to be history in it, including a portrait of George Washington. That piece meant very much to Dolley, enough to risk her safety to ensure its protection. The setting helped you be able to picture everything going on, with the correct era recognized with the dress and attitudes of the people. ( )

I haven't heard about Dolley Madison in some time so it was nice to read a short book about Dolley's exploits. I think this book had the right mix of text and pictures to keep the intended audience engaged. It also illustrated a time in our country's past when it was tough to stand strong and that is just what Dolley Madison did. The author made it a point to show how strong of a person Dolley Madison was. She had many characteristics that helped her positively influence those around her. I also appreciated the author's note at the end of the book that served as a sort of follow up story to the book. It allowed the reader to dig a little bit deeper into Ms. Madison's story. ( )

Woman's history month. Good to introduce famous wives of presidents for students in the classroom. ( )

This picture book tells the story of James Madison's wife, Dolley Madison. Everyone felt from the war between England and America, but Dolley did not. Instead, she made sure the painting of George Washington did not get ruined, fled the city with wagons and carts, and disguised herself to escape the British ransack. She was very brave and was considered a hero. A good story to share about women of history.
