Upon re-reading, this book is particularly long & meandering. Though it purports to be about Prince Llewllyn of Wales, it begins and ends with Joanna, bastard daughter of King John. A good look at the differences between England & Wales, but too much emphasis is placed on war & not enough on the characters. ( )

This is another great piece of historical fiction by this author. It is thorough, in places suspenseful, tragic at times, and replete with very human characters. At times it has a bit too much romance for my taste, but some of it was necessary in the context of the story. It also was somewhat difficult to keep all the characters straight--there are a lot--and to make it more difficult there are multiple Henrys, Richards, Eleanors, Joannas, Wills, Hughs, etc. The English and Welsh could have made life for us readers easier if that didn't insist on using the same names over and over again. Despite these drawbacks, the book was well worth reading. ( )

In this first book of Penman’s Welsh Princes trilogy, we primarily follow Joanna, an illegitimate daughter of King John of England who is married off to Llywelyn, the Prince of Gwynedd. It’s an awkward marriage of state—he’s 18 years older than she is—but they soon end up with a marriage of equals. However, Llywelyn’s eldest son, Gruffudd, is not happy with his new stepmother and is bent on ensuring that he, not her children, will inherit the throne of Wales.

This is one of those books that are rich in details and observations. It is an immersive reading experience. I had to avoid reading some of the squickier-to-me sex scenes, especially when Joanna and Llywelyn first consummated their marriage (as I said, age difference), but everything else was good. It is an especially interesting read because it has a much more nuanced portrait of Bad King John than we traditionally see. Joanna is a complex person herself, struggling to reconcile her view of her father with his horrific actions.

I also liked the author’s note, especially when Penman talked about the greater challenges she faced in chronicling this period of history, in this time period; it was less well chronicled than the era featured in The Sunne in Splendour, so a bit more licence had to be taken in places. Penman explains exactly how she took that licence, which characters were fictional (not that many) and what role they served.

I’m looking forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy! ( )

My husband says it's overly romanticized, and he's no doubt right, but it's such a great read. I could barely put it down yesterday. ( )

A pretty good novel set in the Welsh borders, and wherever the capital of England happens to be at the moment. It is a sprawling family saga, and that's what you expect from SKP. John Plantagenet dies, and this is a transition from the familiar character set SKP has established, but Henry III's court has a certain level of "Game of Thrones" going on. (Spoiler!)
All the dragons are figurative. ( )
