This is a comprehensive overview of techniques for organising and arranging information from cataloguing and classification to information architecture and the semantic web. It is stronger on the former, than the latter but still gives and insight into how the digital complicates long-standing codes and and formats, some of which have endured from the 19th century and the early days of automation in the 1960s. Where next remains a problem. Some of the web references are a little dated, but it's also noticeable how little the debates about organising information for the web and linked data has moved on. ( )

"The book under review does a good job in providing basic facts about the most important kinds of knowledge organizing systems. It is seldom critical, however."
