Alice Osbourne, the stolid daughter of the late vicar, is reeling from the news that Richard Fairfax broke their engagement to marry Evangeline Fontaine, an American girl from the Deep South. Evangeline's arrival causes a stir in the village but not the chaos that would ensue if they knew her motives for being there. Scrappy Elsie Pigeon is among the poor of London who see the evacuations as a chance to escape a life of destitution. Another new arrival is Tanni Zayman, a young Jewish girl who fled the horrors of Europe and now waits with her newborn son, certain that the rest of her family is safe and bound to show up any day. And then there's Frances Falconleigh, a madcap, fearless debutante whose father is determined to keep her in the countryside and out of the papers. --amazon.com.… (més)

This book describes five women of very different cultural backgrounds who pull together for the common good in a small English country town during WWII. I enjoyed the first half of the book. I had major issues with the ending and wanted to hear more about what happened to several of the characters. ( )

Slow start, promising middle, ending felt flat. A lot of unanswered questions, ending was rushed, I need some closure with a few of the characters plot lines. There was more to tell, author could write separate novels for each female lead. ( )

Good story, a little rushed at the end, kind of dropped the ball on the Frances storyline ( )

I found this book as a cheap Amazon daily deal. I'm never sure what I'm getting into when I buy those discounted books. Sometimes you get stuck with a lemon. Not so, in this case. What I thought would be a WWII general fiction book ended up being a really great mystery. Besides the surprise of the storyline, the view into the friendship that the ladies have is amazing. They are from all walks of life, but have been thrown together due to the horrible situations of a country at war. I wasn’t as thrilled with the present day bits and the timeline didn’t seem to add up. It didn’t detract from the overall feel of the book, though. ( )
