"This book recalls the Londonderry Corporation of 1920-1923 which was controlled by a Nationalist/Sinn Fein majority, with local solicitor Hugh O'Doherty as mayor - the last nationalist mayor in Derry until 1973. With Eoin MacNeill being elected Sinn Fein MP for the city in 1918, the cause of independence was enhanced in January 1920 by success at a local level, when the city elected its first nationalist corporation since the 1600s. The book recounts the subsequent violence and destruction in the city (fought between the IRA and Unionism) as it sought to define its position within the national struggle for independence, and remembers the intense fighting of 1920 when, for a brief moment, it came to the brink of full civil war."
