A funny, witty, and amusing book that clearly isn't for everyone. I loved this book overall. I was looking for something funny to read after reading so much drama. I love drama, but I love drama as much as I love comedy. This book really hit the spot for me. There were parts that made me smile and other parts I laughed a little aloud.

Ignatius Reilly has become one of my favorite literary characters. I loved flawed characters. I love how he thinks he is so high and mighty, yet he just annoying. The scene with him at the movie theater made me laugh, although in real life I'd never watch a movie with someone like him in the room. I loved how Tootle dressed him up too. Not always, but sometimes the clothing of a character is important to the plot.

I noticed this book is important to New Orleans culture. I've never been there myself, but this book at least paint a picture for someone like me. Includes dialogue, culture, food, and locations. Parts of the novel I could see the colors or taste the hot dogs. Seriously, this book god me hungry for hot dogs.

As much as I liked this, I can see why some wouldn't like this book. If you get easily offended by things this book isn't for you. Much like adult comedies today, Tootle was poking fun at, well, dunces. Some of the jokes in this are pretty raunchy. There isn't much of a plot either. This is focused more on characters and the setting, which is exactly the reason I loved the book. Try not to over think about this reading this book.

I was recommended this by my mom for the longest time. She couldn't tell me why, but she really liked this book too. After reading this, it's kind of funny she would tell me to read the book because it's about a single man living with his mother. In a weird way, this book is about a son and his mother. ( )

After a re-read, I'll grudgingly give Confederacy Of Dunces a second star. There are some nice rants in there, and the occasional nice turn of phrase. Also, some credit for demonstrating that the term 'mixologist' is not a recent invention.

This novel has its ardent (and vocal) supporters, among whose number I will never be counted. Put simply, the only thing to recommend this book is the humor. If you like the humor, you'll like the book; otherwise, it offers very little entertainment.

The humor is in the vein of the films of the Farrelly brothers, of which I am famously (or perhaps infamously) not a fan. If you find masturbation, intestinal gas, and coarse caricatures of various races and gender orientations to be funny, then you will laugh yourself into the hospital reading this. Needless to say, I don't, and didn't.

There is some claim that the novel perfectly captures New Orleans, and that its central character, Ignatius Reilly, is unique in literature. The first claim has some merit; the second is more debatable. There are plenty of bombastic hypocrites in literature. Not many of them are pathologically-lying Gargantuan man-children, to be sure. The character ends up being an even more pathetic antihero, which is fine, but not all that interesting. ( )

This book was amusing enough to make me laugh fairly frequently, but the plot was just way too thin for a 400 page novel. It was easy to put down and hard to pick back up. ( )

I finally finished A Confederacy of Dunces and it was pure torture for me. I do not get why this is considered genius. I hated the way it bounced about, the way the characters seemed willing to do anything but work, the pseudo-intellectualism. I respect the opinions of all who enjoy this, but it was palaver for me. And between me and the Pulitzer Prize people who do you think is wrong? (That was said tongue in cheek, BTW).

We can't all love every book, so this is just one I will choose not to love. It did not help that I started it months ago, put it down, picked it back up and refused to start over so picked up where I left off, put it down again, determined to get through it so started reading one chapter a week. Not the best way to get the most from any book. I will, however, never be trying this one again. ( )

I couldn't finish it. I hated the characters so much that I just couldn't keep reading about them. They were so realistic but terrible. It was like deliberately trapping myself in a room full of assholes. To that extent, one could say that the good writing was the downfall of the book for me. ( )

John Kennedy Toole
La conjuration des imbéciles
traduit de l'américain par J.-P. Carasso, Laffont
«Drôle de livre, énorme dans la bouffonnerie et la satire, énorme comme son personnage principal, une sorte d'Ubu dévastateur qui lance des anathèmes sur un monde en décomposition.» (Lire, décembre 1981)

A pungent work of slapstick, satire and intellectual incongruities - yet flawed in places by its very virtues.
afegit per Shortride | editaThe New York Times Book Review, Alan Friedman (Web de pagament) (Jun 22, 1980)

Ultimately, Ignatius is simply too grotesque and loony to be taken for a genius; the world he howls at seems less awful than he does. Pratfalls can pass beyond slapstick only if they echo, and most of the ones in this novel do not. They are terribly funny, though, and if a book's price is measured against the laughs it provokes, A Confederacy of Dunces is the bargain of the year.

This is the kind of book one wants to keep quoting from. I could, with keen pleasure, copy all of Jones's dialogue out and then get down to the other characters. Apart from being a fine funny novel (but also comic in the wider sense, like Gargantua or Ulysses), this is a classic compendium of Louisiana speech. What evidently fascinated Toole (a genuine scholar, MA Columbia and so on) about his own town was something that A.J. Liebling noted in his The Earl of Louisiana: the existence of a New Orleans city accent close to the old Al Smith tonality, 'extinct in Manhattan', living alongside a plantation dialect which cried out for accurate recording.

When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him.
— Jonathan Swift, Thoughts on Various Subjects (1706)
There is a New Orleans city accent...associated with downtown New Orleans, particularly with the German and Irish Third Ward, that is hard to distinguish from the accent of Hoboken, Jersey City, and Astoria, Long Island, where the Al Smith inflection, extinct in Manhattan, has taken refuge. The reason, as you might expect, is that the same stocks that brought the accent to Manhattan imposed it on New Orleans.

"You're right on that. We're Mediterranean. I've never been to Greece or Italy, but I'm sure I'd be at home there as soon as I landed."
He would too, I thought. New Orleans resembles Genoa or Marseilles, or Beirut or the Egyptian Alexandria more than it does New York, although all seaports resemble one another more than they can resemble any place in the interior. Like Havana and Port-au-Prince, New Orleans is within the orbit of a Hellenistic world that never touched the North Atlantic. The Mediterranean, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico form a homogeneous, though interuppted, sea.

THE EARL OF LOUISIANA

A green hunting cap squeezed the top of the fleshy balloon of a head. The green earflaps, full of large ears and uncut hair and the fine bristles that grew in the ears themselves, stuck out on either side like turn signals indicating two directions at once. Full, pursed lips protruded beneath the bushy black moustache and, at their corners, sank into little folds filled with disapproval and potato chip crumbs.
Perhaps the best way to introduce this novel-which on my third reading of it astounds me even more than the first-is to tell of my first encounter with it. (Foreword)

"The only problem those people have anyway is that they don't like new cars and hair sprays. That's why they are put away. They make the other members of society fearful. Every asylum in this nation is filled with poor souls who simply cannot stand lanolin, cellophane, plastic, television, and subdivisions."
“I refuse to ‘look up.’ Optimism nauseates me. It is perverse. Since man’s fall, his proper position in the universe has been one of misery.”
