The child looks and recognizes before it can speak.''But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but word can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it. One of the most influential books I read as an undergrad. A professor who taught a photography workshop I took my sophmore year had us read it. I can't say that it made me a better photographer (though it did make me a more thoughtful one), but it did make me a better consumer of art. ( )

Still marvelously important, and surprisingly - but rightly - angry. A joy. ( )

'Berger has the ability to cut right through the mystification of professional art critics ... he is a liberator of images: and once we have allowed the paintings to work on us directly, we are in a much better position to make a meaningful evaluation'
Peter Fuller, Arts Review

Of course a classic, and I am glad I finally got around to reading it. While a lot of Berger's 1972 observations and analyses have become pretty widely accepted, the small detail that struck me as remarkable was his use of third person pronouns - he is shifting between masculine and feminine singular to be more inclusive, something most of us are still having a hard time to do.
