Big Jimmy's Kum Kao Chinese Take Out is a great fiction book based on an actual place. A young boy takes readers through a day at a Chinese take out restaurant. He talks about his father, the owner, and his mother, father, aunts, and uncles, and the jobs they do. He clearly enjoys his family run restaurant, and he takes pride in the work he does as well. The book shows the personal side of this family's restaurant, but also dives into the technical aspect of running a business. ( ) This is narrated by a little boy who's family owns a Chinese take-out restaurant in Brooklyn, "Kum Kau." The book begins in the early morning, and progresses through a fast-paced Saturday. The narrator is extremely excited and helpful during the course of the book. Kum Kau has a very pleasant atmosphere, the young narrator refers to the adult as "Uncles" and "Aunty," and is friendly to the regular customers. The book has a comedic ending, the young narrator enjoys his favorite food... pizza! The illustrations are incredibly rendered photorealistic watercolor paintings... very impressive.
