Marriage to her publisher, Arthur Abbott, has done nothing to stop Barbara Buncle from involving herself in the lives of her neighbours. After leaving Silverstream and moving to London, Barbara and Arthur are enjoying their newly-wedded bliss, but not the city life. The only solution to their problem? Returning to the country. Silverstream is out of the question, but Barbara eventually finds the perfect candidate in the town of Wandlebury. After falling in love with the town, and the run-down Archway House, the Abbotts move in and make it their home. Barbara doesn't intend to get mixed up with those around her, again, but can't help falling into those scrapes, often with humorous consequences… (més)

Frothy reread. But a nice companion for my current, heavier reads. ( )

At one point Mr. Abbott turns to his wife and says "Barbara! You know you're funny now, don't you?" or some such exclamation and that is how I felt here. Stevenson knows that she is funny and is trying a little too hard. It forced but it was still fun. ( )

It's charming, light and takes you back to a nicer world....a 1930s village, full of decent, if quirky, folk and improbable scenarios.
Author Barbara Buncle is now- following her marraiage to her publisher- the happily married Mrs Abbott. The couple move house, and in meeting the solicitor, our heroine inadvertently sees the will of another resident, which will come into play later...
A bit of light relief. ( )

" 'I like the name,' said Arthur. 'I like the name of the book very much indeed. It goes very well with The Pen Is Mightier -- and is quite in the "John Smith" tradition. You will make a lot of money out of the book, Barbara.'

" 'But it musn't be published!' cried Barbara, sitting bolt upright in bed and gazing at him with horror-stricken eyes. 'I never meant it to be published.'

" 'Not published?' exclaimed her publisher in amazement.

" 'No, no, no -- how could you think it, Arthur?'

" 'But why -- '

" 'Because we should have to leave Wandlebury. We should have to leave The Archway House, and it would break my heart ... They would recognize themselves, and we should have to leave. And, even if they didn't, I should always be thinking that they were going to, and I should never have another peaceful moment. You've no idea what it was like at Silverstream -- the strain nearly wore me out.' "

Another delightful, charming "nothing much ever happens" (although really it does) sort of book, set in England between the wars, with all the charm and sweetness of English village life: tea, and walking to town with a basket on one's arm for the shopping, and gossip. So relaxing to slip into another world -- one that doesn't include war or racism or urban blight or poverty. Escapism I know, but still very compelling.

And I've just discovered that there are two sequels! ( )
