This was a re-read after more than 20 years. This book was, for those years, in my top three fiction reads of all time. Not sure it's still there, but I loved it all over again. Despite remembering almost every aspect of t he plot. The writing carried me through, as did the compelling characters (Mercedes is particularly well written) and the story. I also enjoyed the many cultural references that evoked so many memories (the author and I are almost the same age).

Ms. MacDonald controls revelations so that there are surprises nearly up to the end of the book. She writes in clear style, but not graphic. Her revelations are subtle until you are smacked in the fact by your own understanding.

There are so many themes here. This time, I found myself reflecting on the contract in coping mechanisms -- and consequences -- for Frances vs. Mercedes. And I'm not sure I fully understand why Frances so badly wanted a baby.

Un libro colpevolmente poco conosciuto (almeno in Italia) e che invece meriterebbe molta più risonanza.
E' una saga familiare cupa e morbosa, in cui l'aspra bellezza delle coste della Nuova Scozia di inizio novecento si armonizza perfettamente con le vicende torbide dei personaggi.
La passione è il motore della storia, declinata in tutte le sue forme: dal desiderio malato all' amore travolgente, passando per l'estasi religiosa ed una "cupio dissolvi" di matrice mistica. Lo si potrebbe definire un libro di tentazione e redenzione, in cui tutti i protagonisti assaggiano il frutto proibito e dovranno pagare il prezzo del peccato prima di poter ritrovare la pace interiore; una definizione del genere per quanto calzante è però limitante, perché non tiene conto della tridimensionalità dei personaggi o della scrittura intensa eppure delicata dell'autrice, entrambi elementi fondamentali al pari della trama. Anche la storia con la S maiuscola fa capolino tra le pagine ed affrontiamo tanto gli orrori della vita al fronte quanto la desolazione degli anni della Grande Depressione. Peccato solo che il finale perda mordente, è una sorta di epilogo per tirare le fila che risulta tuttavia un po' troppo didascalico e sbrigativo.
In conclusione un libro imponente, spietato ma mai davvero "cattivo", che non può lasciare indifferenti. ( )

There are many layers to this book, because of all the perspectives it takes. interesting reading but a saga, without credibility ( )

This was one of Oprah's last selections of her FIRST book club (she quit and restarted later), and as was typical of her choices it dealt with abuse, incest, dysfunction.

MacDonald carefully controls the revelations however, so that there are still surprises toward the end. Still, looking back, you recognize foreshadowing used throughout. It's a powerful book, but NOT an enjoyable read. I did not like Frances at all; but I love Lily.
