I have mixed feelings about this book. I think I wanted to love it more than I did. Technically I think I would give it 3.5 stars.

While at a family reunion, Beth Cappadora's three year old boy, Ben, is kidnapped. There is no trace of him and the family of 5 is torn apart in multiple ways. This story follows the Cappadora family in their recovery over the course of 10 years after the kidnapping.

I have to say that I was really impressed with Mitchard's writing style. The way she fluidly scored her words together was beautiful while the descriptive scenes and emotions were so realistic and raw. However, with the story being so raw and horrible, I got bored with things not happening towards the middle. Beth's tuning out and lack of desire to be around those who loves her and felt sympathy and empathy became old and at times I found myself exasperated with her (like her husband). Granted, I don't have children so I don't how something like this would feel, but I got a little sick of her attitude and negative pull.

It took me quite a while to get through the book and I wonder if I had been in more of a reading mood and had had more time to read if I would have finished the book in a more timely manner and would have liked the book better... Who knows.

But either way, the ending had me a little choked up (that takes a lot from me) and I was glad to have the book end the way that it did. ( )

Fairly complex story about a lost child. Beth's three-year-old son Ben disappears as she tries to straighten out a reservation at a reunion. His disappearance affects everyone in the family, perhaps most strongly his brother Vincent. While Beth does not give up hope of finding Ben, her focus on him may be a big part of the reason the marriage doesn't last and Vincent acts out.

So we get into the lives of more than one family member, tracing their lives through the years, until something astounding happens. It is the aftermath of that something that I found most interesting and perhaps most real. ( )

Such a disappointment for the first book in Oprah's Book Club. Poorly written. I persevered until the end and I got no more satisfaction. ( )

When Beth Cappadora takes her three children to Chicago for her school reunion, every parent’s worst nightmare comes true as middle child – three year old Ben – goes missing. For nine years Beth and her husband Pat live in limbo, never knowing what happened to their son, or if he is still alive somewhere. Their older son Vincent is in severe danger of going off the rails completely. And then one day, a youngster knocks on her door and Beth is convinced that this is the missing Ben (no spoilers here; this is in the blurb on the back).

I remember watching the film that was based on this book many years ago. It stuck with me a lot, and I wanted to read the book for ages. Unfortunately I would have to say that this is a rare case of the film being better than the book. The premise itself was so interesting if also somewhat morbid; how does a family carry on when a child is missing? It’s not a spoiler to say that in the second half of the book the family and the reader does get to find out what happened, and the focus shifts from the mystery of what happened to Ben, to how everyone deals with the fallout.

The problem for me was not in the storyline itself; it was the fact that it just seemed to go on and on and on, and there was so much in there that didn’t really seem to add anything – some heavy editing could have made such a difference.

I never really warmed to Beth, but it’s worth bearing in mind that we never really know her prior to her son disappearing, and that event affects her so much that she becomes remote and detached from her whole family – so what is an understandable reaction is actually what makes her difficult to like. Pat was marginally more likeable, but my favourite character was Vincent. After the initial story of the disappearance which is told in the third person, but largely from Beth’s point of view, Vincent himself is the focus of other chapters, and we see how Ben’s disappearance and the consequent family dynamic has affected him.

If you like family drama and drawn out storylines, maybe give this one a whirl. I’ll be honest and say that the last 150 or so pages did drag a bit for me and I was glad to finally finish, but even so, the storyline itself was enough to make me consider reading something else by this author. ( )

I remember reading this when it first came out in the late 90's and I remember loving it! When I re-read it, I did not remember one single thing from my previous read. And, I don't remember why I loved it so much. I have never experienced the loss that this family did, but I found each one of the characters more frustrating than the last; and I was unable to relate with any of them. I think that JM tried to get us to identify with Beth and appreciate her honesty in her feelings, but it just didn't happen for me. ( )
