Johnstons andra roman i trilogin om den grekisk-skotske privatdeckaren Alex Mavros utspelar sig i Aten och på Peloponnesos landbygd. Mavros försöker hjälpa dottern till en amerikansk diplomat som mördades i Aten på 70-talet att få svar på vad som egentligen hände. Härvan visar sig snart gå djupare och närmare de kommunistiska grupperingar som Mavros egen far och försvunna bror en gång tillhörde.
Röd död är bättre än den första boken (Blå skuggor) och håller ihop ända in i slutet. Framställningen av Greklands landsbygd och vardagsliv är Johnstons främsta gåva och den ger verkligen romanen liv. ( )
