I thought this book was interesting and could be used in an order elementary school classroom. It talks about a student who is nominated to be captain by a coach and he isn't a very good captain. Before the championship game, the student steps down and nominates his friend to be captain. They win the championship game and that's the end. I wouldn't read this to my students because I don't know how I could incorporate a lesson around it, but I would want it to be in my library for students to read independently. I thought it was a fun read that students who are in 4th-5th grade would enjoy. ( )

Rob Lasher is a player on the Pirates soccer team. His coach has a heart attack during practice and Rob does enough CPR to keep him alive. Rob is an instant hero. However they get a new coach who does not know about soccer. He elects Rob to be the captain and Rob is not qualified to do so. The other players become frustrated with the way the team is playing. Rob ended up standing up and saying that Benji should be the captain. The whole team agreed and they won the big game. I can see how this book would be interesting for kids who love sports. I don't think I would use the book myself for lessons.

Peters, Stephanie True. Soccer Hero. New York: Little, Brown, 2007. Print.

“Soccer Hero”, written by Stephanie True Peters, is appropriate for the ages of about 8 to 12, especially boys and sports lovers. This easy-to-read novel centers upon a 12 year boy, named Rob Lasher who’s an average soccer player. However one day he saves his coach’s life when he suffers a heart attack and as a result, his team members see him as a hero. Rob’s team gets a new coach pretty quickly, as their former coach isn’t well enough to continue but Rob is miserable, as things are quite different now.

I feel that “Soccer Hero” honestly portrays the realities of life for today's children because even though the new coach makes Rob the captain of his team things don’t run smoothly, as other team mates get jealous, which is only human nature. The following is an example of the latter, "he saw Dmitri and Scott exchange looks. Neither was clapping and then Rob noticed that a few other boys were only applauding halfheartedly….the coach may have chosen Rob for their captain but Rob wasn’t their choice" (Peters, 57). Therefore I believe “Soccer Hero” illuminates problems and issues of growing up in today's world, the main one being, no matter how good of a person you are, they’ll always be people who’ll be against you and try to bring you down, due to their own insecurities. I also think this is typical behavior of a modern, Caucasian sports team.

I believe the universal implications of “Soccer Hero”, are the themes of the novel, which are the love of sport, heroism, friendship and jealousy. Clearly people from all over the world would be able to relate with this.

I feel that the characters in “Soccer Hero” are convincing and credible to today's children, particularly considering the fact that Rob is a reluctant hero. Hence with my experience more often that not, it’s not considered “cool” for children to be given all the praise and attention for something they’ve done, especially when it’s in front of their friends. Thus when Rob saves his coach’s life and his best friend, Benji, says that he’s a hero, the following occurs, "For a moment Rob was too dumbfounded to say anything. Then he began to protest, “I’m not a hero! I – “ But he didn’t get a chance to finish what he wanted to say because, to his extreme mortification, Kirk started clapping" (15).

Quite a bit of negative behavior occurs in “Soccer Hero”, due to Rob being a hero. Consequently when Rob is made the team’s captain by his new coach, the team’s former hero, Dmitri is very jealous of Rob’s newfound attention, and therefore he has it in for Rob. An example that portrays this in the novel is, Dimitri “continued straight for Rob. At the last moment, Rob had to jump out of the way or else be flattened” (63).

I think that Peters avoids stereotyping in “Soccer Hero” by the fact that the new coach doesn’t know much about soccer, and therefore makes Rob, (who’s an average soccer player), the team’s captain. The latter is depicted in the following passage, "I know cars, not soccer…I’m going to need someone who knows this game inside and out to steer me and this team right.” He jerked a thumb at Rob. “From what I read, this here’s the guy to help me out” (56). (The new coach only knows about Rob because his story was in the newspaper, from when he saved the former coach’s life).

I don’t think that “Soccer Hero” develops children’s appreciation for our ever-changing pluralistic society, as no nationalities are actually stated in the text and the front cover only shows 2 Caucasian boys. As well as this Rob is described as being “sandy-haired” (1). ( )

Rob wished the earth would open up and swallow him whole. When the clapping continued, he jumped up, pushed through the circle of players, and ran off the field.
