This was an insightful and eye-opening book that tells the stories of three children from Sudan, Somalia, and Ethiopia who were forced to flee their countries and become refugees. These children give us a peak into their life as a refugee and why they were forced to become one in the 1990s. All of their stories really put things into perspective and makes you think of everything we take for granted in Western civilization. I love that the book includes artwork from different children residing in refugee camps. The author also includes brief introductions on the history and then present day (1990s) conditions of each country. Although this book was written decades ago, a look into the lives of refugees is still a relevant one. ( )

Sybella Wilkes, the author of this book, interviewed 3 refugee children from Africa. Their stories are about their travels and struggles through Sudan, Somalia, and Ethiopia. Each of their stories are very heart wrenching and unimaginable. The book includes artwork and written stories of many young children from Africa, giving the reader an interpretation of what they have endured through life. Sybella Wilkes also includes some history of the wars and gives an explanation of what a refugee is and how children become refugee's. ( )
