Cass and Guy have just got married, and decide to buy a holiday cottage in Scotland. They have different reasons for doing so, however, and their lives start to veer in different directions.

While the topic is sad, poignant in places, it's overall an uplifting and moving book. The writing is good, the storyline believable. The descriptions of the countryside in the Highlands feels heartfelt, written from experience, without just the right amount of detail to set the scene.

The characters are well-drawn, some of them getting right under my skin. I liked re-acquainting myself with a few minor characters who featured in previous books. This novel stands alone, but there's extra interest in having read earlier ones as well. There are one or two surprises alongside the inevitable main storyline.

I re-read this book after 15 years, and had entirely forgotten the characters and what happened. I liked it very much and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys thoughtful women's fiction. ( )
