( ) 'Stepping on the Cracks' is set in a small town in 1944, Margaret and her best friend Elizabeth both have brothers fighting overseas, but bully Gordy Smith is their main trouble. Margaret is an introspective girl but it's what her and Elizabeth discover in the woods that makes her reconsider what war does. That Hahn makes this kind of statement in a book set during World War II, an almost unarguably justified war, makes it all the more thought-provoking. This story, told from Margaret's perspective, is really about Gordy and his family. I think if Hahn had tried telling this from Gordy's perspective it would have been far too disturbing for a kid's book of the early 90s, especially from such a well-established writer as Hahn. Gordy was given the chance to "speak" in a couple sequels of his own, one of which I did read back when, but more on that here, as he was living in a such an extremely abusive house he wouldn't have had the freedom to reflect on his personal situation and his secret the way Margaret does. Survival usually takes up most of your time in such situations. I never had a bully, growing up all of us kids spread the misery around more or less equally. I'm curious as to how people who were preyed upon feel about these "bully with a heart/soul or at least a very unhappy/horrifying homelife" books. I think I would still despise the kid who punched me out or made me feel like shit for no reason even if I knew for a fact that kid himself was a victim. But, as it is, the multi-dimensional character of Gordy, the debate on war (never answered by Hahn, readers must make their own decision), Margaret's questioning of her dependent relationship with Elizabeth and the authenticity of the whole setting makes for a great book. If I had picked this up when I was younger I would have learned years sooner that Hahn was a favorite because of what runs underneath her stories, not the supernatural trimmings she often uses to illustrate her point. Gordy Smith Next: 'Following My Own Footsteps' Let me just say, this book was a lot better than I originally thought it would be. I usually don't read WWII novels, I am more into the Civil War myself, so this was a different kind of read for me. But let me tell you it was worth it. This book hooked me in on the first sentence. In this book, Margaret and her best friend Elizabeth find a hut in the woods. At first, Margaret is scared to go into it, but with prompting, Margaret goes in. It turns out that Gordy (the class bully) is hiding his deserting brother in the hut. They black mail him in order for them not to tell. Along the way they get into many hardships, but they find a way through it. The cool thing about this book is that even though it is a childrens book, it isn't written like one. This is the perfect book for a child to read because it is all very easy to understand and it is very intriguing. However, an adult would enjoy this book just as much as a child. The way the author portrays everything it is obvious she must have witnessed it. In my personal opinon, eveyone should read this book. It doesn't matter if you don't think you would like it, just trust me, you will. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
