Brother Cadfael discovers a murder amid the wreckage of Shrewsbury Castle in this mystery series featuring "a colorful and authentic medieval background" (Publishers Weekly). In the summer of 1138, war between King Stephen and the Empress Maud takes Brother Cadfael from the quiet world of his garden into a battlefield of passions, deceptions, and death. Not far from the safety of the abbey walls, Shrewsbury Castle falls, leaving its ninety-four defenders loyal to the empress to hang as traitors. With a heavy heart, Brother Cadfael agrees to bury the dead, only to make a grisly discovery: one extra victim that has been strangled, not hanged.   This ingenious way to dispose of a corpse tells Brother Cadfael that the killer is both clever and ruthless. But one death among so many seems unimportant to all but the good Benedictine. He vows to find the truth behind disparate clues: a girl in boy's clothing, a missing treasure, and a single broken flower . . . the tiny bit of evidence that Cadfael believes can expose a murderer's black heart. … (més)

OK, first things first, My cover is from the TV series tie in and Derek Jacobi is NOT Cadfael in any way, shape or form. Having got that out of the way, onto the book.
This might be considered the first of the real series, it is set in Shrewsbury at the time of the siege of the castle by King Stephen and it is very much rooted in the place. We see Cadfael moving about within the monastery and the town, the life of the cloister carrying on much as it did in peace, but with the close proximity of war. Into this mix are two pair of young people, each drawn from either side of the divide. There are a number of strands of story to be unpicked, and they all are, but not without a few moments of peril on the way. Cadfael pits is wits against Hugh Berrengar, who will become a frequent visitor as the series progresses and he is, in some ways, an image of Cadfael as a younger man. I find these just a delightful place to escape to. ( )

When Shrewsbury town & abbey falls to King Stephen's forces, all 93 defenders of the tower are executed, only there were 94 bodies instead. Cadfael is called in to investigate in spite of the Sheriff's objections. A murderer has taken advantage of the executions to dump a victim & Cadfael discovers that the murderer has taken an interest in the victim's sister. Will he be able to prevent an evil plan from being carried out? If only Cadfael can expose the murderer in time. ( )

I had doubts starting this one, because it starts off slow. Really slow. Like, omg, this book is never, ever going to end. This was largely due to the history dump Peters gives the reader in the beginning; the boring-to-me kind of history about battles and wars and political shenanigans.

Then the dead body is found in the pile, and Cadfael gets his new assistant and stuff starts happening. Midway through I was loving this story; "cat and mouse" comes to mind, but it's really much more "cat vs cat" because Cadfael is up against a man as clever as he is and there's no mouse in this plot. The almost-the-end/climax-but-not was magnificent; the machinations were making me positively giddy, and yet the mystery itself continued. Once Cadfael figured out who the murderer was, I admit I felt a bit knuckle-headed because the possibility never even entered my mind. I can only tell myself I was entirely too caught up it the sub-plot of cat-n-cat and wasn't paying attention.

That's what I'm telling myself anyway.

These are excellent mysteries for anyone who wants something more serious than a cozy, but doesn't want hard-core thrillers or crime stories. Enjoying history is a plus, but not necessary save for the first few chapters. There are 20 books in this series and if each of them are this meaty, I'll be reading them for years to come, because they aren't the kind I can binge read. Yay!

This book works for the Kill Your Darlings game's COD: Stabbed with a sword. Primarily, it takes place during the middle ages, but it also is set in the midst of a civil war and the text is chock full of the word "sword". ( )

The second book of the Cadfael series but the first to take place in Shrewsbury, the setting for the majority of the series, also this volume includes more about the political situation of the time detailing the struggle between King Stephen and Empress Maude. ( )
