This isn't my sort of book usually. I picked it up at the library for my son but I started reading it while in the drive through line at Popeye's and I finished it the next night. you don't spend much time getting to know the characters or getting a lot if background but still... I thought I was getting a Final Destination-esque story but that's not what this is. This is I Know What You Did Last Summer. ( )

Really good ideas, kept me interested, but plot holes and kinda meh writing make me disinterested in a sequel. Teens looking for a creepy horror read will enjoy this. ( )

This is a really spooky book. The prologue had me scratching my head a bit, and I admit that I wasn't sure if I would like the rest of the novel. But it is undeniably creepy, and by the end of chapter one I was hooked.

There are no wasted scenes in this book. Even a ride that two characters take in a car is a chance for character development and flashbacks to flesh out the story. Piece by piece, the terrifying experience that these six kids shared is revealed through a well-crafted plot.

Five years ago, six kids were the only survivors of a fire that took the lives of the adult members of the brainwashing cult in which they lived. "In five years' time, your greatest fear will consume you. It will rob you of your last breath." This is the prophecy that they face today. They manage to escape the cult and try to move on with their lives, but cannot forget those ominous words spoken by their cult leader before his death.

Brought together again under mysterious circumstances, it becomes clear that some of the evil that haunted them from within the cult still runs free. One by one, the friends are killed, in increasingly gruesome ways, while those remaining try to desperately to find some answers and some peace.

With echoes of Edgar Allan Poe, the macabre, murderous details of the plot become a metaphor for these individuals to find control over their own lives, and to live their lives on their terms. The question is: will any of them live long enough to figure out how to do it?

The ending is satisfying, with enough details left open-ended to encourage a sequel. I fully expect to see this story on the big screen. ( )

You should read this book! It is somewhat scary. Why everyone was dying for no reason [was compelling]. I thought it left off at a very nice cliffhanger. AHS/RK

An evocative, horror story that shows the corruption and power of religion. The deaths of the kids [was compelling]. At the end, is it 96 or 93 days? (Confusing) AHS/LM

The plot is a constant rise and fall of intense action ending with an exciting and sudden slap-in-the-face twist. The characters were so believable you mourn the deaths of those murdered and actually fear the “villain(s).” My interest was peaked right away as the book starts with a murder and the plot kept unfolding more and more mystery while ending slightly open to keep the mystery boiling in the reader’s mind. I really liked the vague descriptions of each character’s past that were given in bits and pieces for the reader to connect as they read on. AHS/SS

How everyone of the kids died a different was [was compelling]. How they tried to get away. It kind of sound like they copied the movie “The Boogeyman” AHS/HS

When Allison Burke was ten years old, the Divine Path cult came to their small town in the form of Jacob Crawley, the Prophet. He preached about the Divine Path going up in a wall of flame, the end of the world, and their worst fear taking away their lives after five years...because the death of the six children would signal God's plan for the end of the world. Allison had lost her younger sister Melanie to a murder a few months before. Then her Ma disappeared. Twenty-four adults, including her Daddy and her, moved to several cabins outside of town with Jacob into the "cult settlement". They took their six children with them who were all the same age. Two years later, the six children were standing around in a circle while the cabins burned with their parents and Jacob. They did not wake up. They could not. Jacob poisoned them all. Then Sheriff Cooper sent them off to foster families out of state. Now, seventeen years old and living with her foster family, Allison gets a forwarded newspaper article about the death of Harold Crawley, one of the six children who survived the burning. Allison decides to go back to her old town for the funeral without telling her stepfamily. Her spine tingles when she learns that all five of them got the same message. After the funeral, they drink to forget the prophesy that just came true for Harold. Morning finds Emma dead when they break down the door of her hotel room. They snoop around Marcum Shale's office, the article's author and find newspaper articles on the burning, all saying that twenty-three adults died. So, ONE ADULT SURVIVED! What does Shale now about the burning? Someone must be after them! Allison and David finds Jade and Ike dead. The Sheriff tells them to leave that day or he'll have the Deputy arrest them for murder. Allison and David finds Shale's house and they end up fighting for their life. Is the prophesy coming true for them too? What about the end of the world? I did not like reading the gruesome deaths of the four teenagers. But if you like terror, this book is a must-read! ( )
