This one isn't my favorite. I think because I'm not a fan of militant activism. I found Cawti to be too... determined, and I totally emphasize with Vlad. The story itself is well written, as always. ( ) Even more than the next book, Phoenix, the focus is on Vlad and whether he should continue his line of work as assassin and crime boss, but added is a fair amount of questioning of the whole caste system. Vlad's wife Cawti joins an Easterner-based revolutionary. The government is not all that concerned, but the disruptions they cause upset the local crime lord, leading Vlad to decide the best way to protect Cawti is to get both sides to wipe each other out. Much of the plot involves Vlad ignoring pretty much everyone he interacts with. Readable but too much of the story felt forced to me.
