Collection of essays reporting on a multidisciplinary investigation of the Aboriginal red ochre mine at Toolumbunner on the southern slopes of the Gog Range, Tasmania. Explains the site's status in ethnohistorical literature, and its place in Tasmanian Holocene cultural developments, as well as providing a technical account of ochre excavation at Toolumbunner. Also gives an analysis of human interest in red ochre and its social and cultural significance. Includes references, a bibliography and an index. The editor is senior lecturer in archaeology at the University of Melbourne. His other publications include 'The Caucasian Region in the early Bronze Age'.
