A planetary system, consisting of a star and five planets, is travelling through our galaxy and will pass close to Earth. The four largest planets are gaseous, but the fifth, named Achilles, appears capable of supporting life. Two rival expeditions - one Anglo-American and one Russian - set out to land on Achilles and explore its mysteries. But almost from the moment of their arrival things begin to go terribly wrong ... and when they return to Earth, something not human will be coming back with them. One of the most exciting novels by world-renowned scientist Sir Fred Hoyle (1915-2001) and Geoffrey Hoyle, "Fifth Planet" (1963) is a thrilling science fiction tale that ranks alongside Hoyle's masterpiece "The Black Cloud." 'An exciting book for all science fiction enthusiasts ... will leave the reader wondering about our future life on earth.' - "Evening Journal" 'Fred Hoyle, a celebrated astronomer, is a man of vast imagination ... the story is sharp, clear and full of suspense.' - "Washington (D.C.) Evening Star" 'A mature performance ... the best so far from the Hoyle stable.' - "Sunday Times"… (més)

This is my second Hoyle novel. The first was "The black cloud". Hoyle novels are written in the mid twentieth century British style with a UK audience in mind. There are lots of British idioms, phrases and words. This makes his stories a bit tedious. They both include intelligent British scientist dealing with highly intelligent, mysterious and invisible aliens.

This story has the usual British subplot of a wife of one of the main characters sleeping with another character. The main character finds this nearly as distasteful as his improperly cooked breakfast egg. This is generally required in mid 20th century British novels. Arthur C. Clarke completely avoided this problem by a writing style that did not peg him to particular English speaking country.

Hoyle and son write fairly good stories. If you can get past some ridiculous plot holes the books are OK reads ( )

This is the third Hoyle novel I have read though the first co authored by Fred's son Geoffrey.

They are all cartoonish in their approach. Two dimensional characters, lots of talking to explain the science or the set up. Written in the early 1960's , there is the necessary Russia vs the West ( interestingly England has become some kind of neutral space, with Switzerland losing out on that front)

The novels are thought experiments ...what would be the consequences for Earth and its peoples if X were to occur. In the case of Fifth Planet, X is another planetary system passing close enough to Earth to allow Earth to send ( separate expeditions from Russia and the West ) expeditions to land on the one likely habitable planet in the visiting system ( the so called Fifth Planet ) and return to Earth, before the system passes out of our solar system again.

I cannot say that the people aspects of the book are any better than the others, notwithstanding Geoffrey " not being a scientist [like his famous father] has had time to devote more time to the people aspects of the novel" [ not a perfect quote ]

Notwithstanding all of this , I don't mind these books....they raise interesting ideas, efficiently work it over in 200 pages and do not think themselves greater or more important than they are.

Having said all of that the best of these I have read of the "Hoyles" so far has been " The Black Cloud " .

ps the now pathetic reasons for inclusion of a woman on the Russian team , and the stereotypical reaction of the public and the West's team, makes one cringe ( )
