Sarah, arriving from the seashores of Maine, contrasted with an isolated mid-western farm, makes a great story. Despite the hardships portrayed, I found the story comforting when I was younger and I still do. The book is well deserving of the Newbery Medal, among other literary accolades it has received. The TV mini-series starring Glenn Close and Christopher Walken is equally good, which is saying a lot since I generally avoid watching the Hallmark channel, especially the saccharin sweet holiday movies. (My apologies to any fans of the channel!) Rating: 5 stars Original date of publication: 1985 Lovely story with a happy ending. The boys and I really loved this one. The writing is wonderful. The passages are lyrical and descriptive. This story really illustrates in an accessible manner the way that people moved in former times. Many people, mail order brides included, just packed up and went and hoped for the best and made the best of what they found. Anna and Caleb live with their father in the plains. Their mother died when Caleb was born, and now their father decided to put an advertisement in the paper for a wife and mother for his children. Sarah Wheaton answers, and agrees to come visit from Maine. She brings joy and song to the house - but will she stay? Rereading this was an unexpected comfort read for me. The story is very short, almost a sketch or an outline, leaving the reader to fill in some of the details. The relationships between the characters are very sweet, and you feel for young Anna and Caleb wanting to have Sarah stay, and afraid she'll be too homesick and leave.
