I really enjoyed this book. I have not read much Anita Shreve but this book was well-written and a real page-turner. It revolves around a single incident at a boarding school and each short chapter is, in essence, a testimony about the ripple effect that this incident has had on those involved and those around them. It's interesting to piece together the story as you go along and figure out the relationships between characters. I do recommend this one. ( )

A sex scandal involving teens at a private school in Vermont - this type of story has likely been written a thousand times over by many authors. Topic aside, there are a few things I really liked about this book. First, I thought it was interesting that the author switched points of view throughout the story. It's rare that I read stories told in the second person point of view. Hearing different peoples' perspective on the events leading up to and following the scandal kept me hooked. Lastly, I loved that the story really honed in on the impact that one single event, one choice, could have on so many peoples' lives. ( )

This was a great "read." I put it in quotes because I listened to the audiobook, which was read by a cast of readers. That added to the story, which was well developed. Of course, that's what I like about Shreve's writing - she writes about life's messiness. People make mistakes, people do stupid things, and there are consequences. I really enjoyed listening to this as I drove to work and then home on a daily basis; it made rush hour a lot less frustrating. ( )

The most interesting aspect of this tale is the path that an act of indiscretion sets in motion. Told in the various voices of several characters, this technique makes the telling a bit disjointed. The characters did not always seem true to their personalities. Sometimes they seemed wiser than they actually were and then later, more foolish. None were particularly likable. Indeed, the author doesn't seem to know where blame should be placed and who, if any, is more guilty than the others. Maybe that was her point: there certainly is more than two sides to this story! The end is predictable; though the author seems to want to build some suspense, it just isn't there. ( )

Picked this up on a whim at the lib; have read Shreve before (& wasn't too thrilled) & was tempted to quit after the first few chapters. Glad I didn't; turned out to be really very very good, and thought-provoking. A film showing three 18-20 year old guys having sex, orally & vaginally, with a 14 year old girl is handed to the headmaster at a private school in the east. He keeps it a secret, thinking he can contain it. Kicks the guys out. All hell breaks loose. -- The thing is, the form of the book is, each chapter is from the viewpoint of someone else, and most, but not all, of them are in first person. Plus the time skips around a bit. So I was turned off. -- But oh my, it really comes together & I read it in 2 nights. -- Very very thoughtful & engrossing. ( )

This is my second read for this author and I have to say, I am underwhelmed... after reading Rescue, I was looking forward to reading more by Anita Shreve but Testimony seemed to miss the mark.

A very enticing topic, I thought this book held a lot of promise. However, I found that the book lacked organization and that would be it's main downfall, in my opinion. It seemed to jump from year-to-year without mention of when it was and while this is normally not an issue, it was hard to figure out and I spend unnecessary time figuring it out. Also, the jumping from character to character, when added to the year-to-year jumping, was very confusing. Having so many characters involved, I almost needed a family tree/chart to keep track of who each person was and what their involvement in the story/crime was... very hard to track.

On a whole, the story was very good. I enjoyed the plot and I liked the twist that comes towards the end, regarding Silas and his family. It was very unexpected and definitely made me read that much harder to get to the bottom of the story.

Overall, I am glad that I have read this book and being at a 50% for the author, I will give her another try.

I would encourage every parent of a teenage girl to give her a copy of Testimony. Certainly, it contains several passages that are bleakly obscene. But it also offers girls the exact kind of story they want to read

It was a small cassette, not much bigger than the palm of his hand, and when Mike thought about the terrible license and risk exhibited on the tape, as well as its resultant destructive power, it was as though the two-by-three plastic package had been radioactive.
