Aquest llibre explica les primers passos de Mara, filla de l'últim Lord Acoma, quan inesperadament, a la mort del seu pare i el seu germà; es nomenada Governanta.
En la societat Tsurani, les famílies nobles d'un cert prestigi intenten anorrear-se les unes a les altres en l'anomenat "Joc del Consell".
Un dels punts forts del llibre és l'ambientació. La societat tsurana té reminiscències al japó feudal, amb un concepte de l'honor extremadament estricte i complex que regeix tots els aspectes de la seva vida.
En realitat el llibre s'acaba centrant en quatre episodis molt concrets, i no se n'acaba de sortir, per molt que ho repeteixi, de transmetre la presència omnipresent del "Joc del Consell" en la vida diària.
El llibre té altres aspectes poc afortunats, com la raça dels cho-ja, uns extraterrestres sortits del no-res; o la despersonalització total de totes les persones que no són personatges principals.
En conjunt, és una lectura entretinguda i que possiblement millora en els altres dos llibres de la trilogia; però tampoc ho recomanaria a aquells que no siguin habituals del gènere. ( )
