When Vladimir Nabokov's translation of Pushkin's masterpiece Eugene Onegin was first published in 1964, it ignited a storm of controversy that famously resulted in the demise of Nabokov's friendship with critic Edmund Wilson. While Wilson derided it as a disappointment in the New York Review of Books, other critics hailed the translation and accompanying commentary as Nabokov's highest achievement. Nabokov himself strove to render a literal translation that captured "the exact contextual meaning of the original," arguing that, "only this is true translation." Nabokov's Eugene Onegin remains the most famous and frequently cited English-language version of the most celebrated poem in Russian literature, a translation that reflects a lifelong admiration of Pushkin on the part of one of the twentieth century's most brilliant writers. Now with a new foreword by Nabokov biographer Brian Boyd, this edition brings a classic work of enduring literary interest to a new generation of readers.… (més)

The Falen translation of Pushkin’s “novel in verse” masterpiece really drew me in and was a very enjoyable read. Falen remains true to the original Russian rhyme and metre scheme and adds an excellent introduction and annotations. There is much to be appreciated here; the excitement and splendor of 18th century aristocratic Russia, contrasted with Onegin’s boredom and ennui, his “spleen”; a timeless story of love, rejection, loss, guilt; and Pushkin’s allusions to his development as an artist, a transition from poet to prose writer.

And scorning then Apollo’s ire
To humble prose I’ll bend my lyre:
A novel in the older vein
Will claim what happy days remain.

Pure genius, a joy to read.
I cannot understand why I had let so many years pass before re-reading Eugene Onegin. ( )

A szentimentális regényeket olvasgató, önmagát regényhősnők helyébe képzelő Tatyjána beleszeret a távoli fővárosból érkező Anyeginbe. A világirodalom egyik leghíresebb levelében szerelmet vall neki, a férfi azonban visszautasítja. Aztán a végén a két főhős újra találkozik: ekkor a nagyvilági férjes asszony, Tatyjána kap szerelmes levelet Anyegintől, és ő utasítja vissza a férfit. A varázs azonban évszázadok óta tart. (Bookline)

A verses regény főhőse a kor nemesi intelligenciájának alaptípusa, elégedetlenséget érző, de döntésre és ellenállásra képtelen ifjú, a „felesleges ember”, aki kora társadalmától és a néptől egyaránt távol áll, s a kibontakozás útját nem találva egykedvű, életunt. Anyegin figuráján keresztül nemcsak Puskin két száműzetésének, majd a fővárosba való visszatérésének élményei épülnek a műbe, hanem a szerelem, párbaj, bál és színház motívumok hangsúlyos szerepével voltaképpen saját életformáját örökíti meg a kiábrándult dekadencia atmoszférájában. A mű – polifonikus kompozíciója révén – egyúttal hű és tárgyilagos képet rajzol a kor Oroszországának életéről, nemcsak a főváros, hanem a falvak és az udvarházak hangulatát is híven tükrözi. S bár közvetlen politikai vonatkozásai nincsenek, a sorok mögé bújva érezhető feszültséget teremt a forradalom szükségességének vágya. (Moly.hu)

The story arc is beautifully constructed. The characters are deeply affecting. The denouement took my breath away. ( )

[Steeped in vanity, he had moreover the particular sort of pride that makes one acknowledge with equal indifference both his good and evil actions, a consequence of a sense of superiority, perhaps imaginary. From a private letter.] (Falen translation)

Not thinking of the proud world's pleasure,
But cherishing your friendship's claim,
I would have wished a finer treasure
To pledge my token to your name--
One worthy of your soul's perfection,
The sacred dreams that fill your gaze,
Your verse's limpid, live complexion,
Your noble thoughts and simple ways.
But let it be. Take this collection
Of sundry chapters as my suit:
Half humorous, half pessimistic,
Blending the plain and idealistic--
Amusement's yield, the careless fruit
Of sleepless nights, light inspirations
Born of my green and withered years . . .
The intellect's cold observations,
The heart's reflections, writ in tears.
