Included in this book is a two-page spread telling a Sorcerer's Apprentice-like story of the Golem with porridge overwhelming the town.

A stunning book that the author wrote to tell his daughter the tale of his childhood and the city that he was raised in. Layered, detailed illustrations intermixed with 3 legends from Sis' Prague upbringing. More suitable for older kids, as there is a lot of text. ( )

Initially, this book seems very dark and spooky; the deserted eastern European setting of the author's memory appears to be full of grim memories. The richness in the stories that are revealed through the three keys, however, runs deep, and take more than one or two readings to fully appreciate. The overall theme of the yearning to return to the past is heartfelt for anyone who has left a place behind.

Curricular connections: A study of this mysterious city of Prague, past and present, would be a great way to continue to explore this story. ( )

Take a walk through the Prague of Peter Sis's childhood and learn of some of the folktales/myths with which he grew up.

I'm really getting sucked into Sis's artwork, even though I hated it in The Wall. I don't really know who his intended audience is, besides an adult daughter, but this certainly isn't a children's book. This falls under the "picture books for adults" genre, I'd say (although it's not a graphic novel).

After reading these picture books, I think, "Well, that was interesting." And that's about it. However, I feel like I know a little bit about Prague, now. A LITTLE bit. ( )

My Dear Madeleine, Sweet little round daughter with beautiful eyes and constant smile. By the time you can make sense of this note it will be the 21st century. You were born in New York, in the New World, and surely you wil be wondering one day where your father came from. This book is to explain just that. You might never speak Czech. You may prefer other parts of this beautiful planet-blue seas, green islands, bustling metropolises. You are free. However, one day you will enter Prague, the place I grew up, in your silent slippers soft as cat's paws, and you will look for the keys. Maybe. If you find the keys, unlock the mystery of Prague very, very slowly. I could give you dates, I could give you history, but only you will decide if you want to know. You might find some of my lost marbles I played with. You will hear the same bells I listened to in my childhood. Prague is a magic place if you take time! Rainer Maria Rilke wrote: "I know my little mother Prague to her very heart, to her very heart...the heart always keeps the deepest secrets, and there are many secrets in these old houses." By the way, don't be afraid of the old black cats...they might just be hobgoblins in cat's clothing... Kiss Kiss Peter
