I like Piercy's voice in these poems, but instead of focusing on feminism, which is what I'm looking for, she dives into the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement, all of which make sense for the time period in which these poems were written (mid- to late 60s). There are a few relevant feminist poems, though they are still developmental in terms of Piercy's aims. Specifically, I find "Embryos," "The friend," and "The morning half-life blues" quite interesting. I like "Embryos" because it is the beginning of Piercy's interest in abortion, which shows up more prominently in her late 90s collections. "The friend" hearkens to Piercy's interest in male-female relationships and the patriarchal struggle women face every day. It also previews "Barbie Doll" somewhat with the image of cutting off what offends men and society. "The morning half-life blues" isn't as direct as the other two in its feminist goals but still presents Piercy's early ideas on society's view of women while tackling other topics listed above. Overall, this is an interesting collection of poetry if you're studying the Vietnam War of the Civil Rights Movement, but it's not one to look into for feminism.
