Effectively Lord of the Rings fan fiction. Only the names of the characters have been changed to protect the guilty. The actual writing is about on a par with Alan Dean Foster. ( )

I went into this book with no background about it aside from the knowledge that the series had been made into a show, but by all accounts it was quite a fantasy classic. So I had quite high hopes for The Sword of Shannara, but this one really didn't click for me.

Most of the criticism leveled against it seems to be due to its very heavy use of The Lord of the Rings as its source material. This I didn't actually mind that much, since there's a reason that Tolkien is as popular and influential as he is, and though the resulting plot is understandably unoriginal, it is still a good story. However such a close adaptation automatically invites comparison with the original, and in all respects, I feel like Brooks' work falls short.

The characters are less well rounded out and engaging, the plot is less cohesive, and the prose far more clunky. Even the world, although populated with a nice assortment of races and cultures, did not feel particularly well crafted, with some elements more fleshed out than others, and random bits of information which often seemed irrelevant. I also expected this interesting premise of a world 2000 years after a nuclear war to bring something extra to the standard fantasy setting, but there was little to be found. Brooks' narration style didn't help, with a weird third person omniscience sometimes jumping to character perspective which seemed to break up the narrative flow.

In saying that, The Sword of Shannara does have its moments, and the story is solid enough that I was able to finish it without feeling like it was a trial, so I won't relegate it to one star status. But it remains to be seen what Brooks can bring to the table in the rest of the trilogy to prove his place as a fantasy great. ( )

The one that started the addiction! ( )

I had attempted Tolkien in my early teens and struggled, I was yet to reach a reading maturity whereby I could appreciate the depth in a Tolkien story. So, The Sword of Shannara, was my first epic quest novel and I loved it. So much so, I named a child after one of the characters, and find that I have modelled passages of my own writing on Terry Brooks' style. The Sword of Shannara has all the hallmarks of an epic adventure, fantasy style, and follows all the steps in Joseph Campbell's 'Hero's Journey' from the call to a reluctant hero, to a satisfying conclusion. Later in my reading journey when I returned to Tolkien, I credit The Sword of Shannara, for my joy of the genre. It was my gateway. ( )

Ormai lo sanno anche i sassi - credo - che ne La Spada di Shannara ci sono innumerevoli riferimenti a Il Signore degli Anelli di Tolkien, al punto che Terry Brooks è spesso liquidato come un meschino scopiazzatore del professore di Oxford.

In effetti, i riferimenti sono moltissimi e vanno dai personaggi alle situazioni. Stranamente, non mi hanno dato fastidio come si solito mi accade in questi casi. Credo che questo sia dovuto a tre fattori.

Il primo: Tolkien è un autore così importate che è impossibile ignorarlo se si scrive un certo tipo di fantasy. Ormai ci immaginiamo gli Elfi come li ha descritti Tolkien, così come ci immaginiamo l'Inferno come l'ha descritto Dante. Terry Brooks non è certo l'unico ad aver "preso in prestito" qualcosa da Tolkien (un esempio per tutti: i Dissennatori di J. K. Rowling).

Il secondo: nonostante le analogie, La Spada di Shannara e Il Signore degli Anelli sono due rette parallele che non si incontrano mai. Tolkien ha creato un mondo di ampio respiro, dove ogni razza ha la sua storia e le sue caratteristiche, un mondo epico. Brooks ha scritto un romanzo intorno alla leggendaria Spada di Shannara, contornandola con le razze tipiche del fantasy e giustificando azioni e comportamenti con una storia plausibile. La differenza di lavoro tra i due autori è abissale.

Il terzo: lo stile di Brooks è così immaturo, ripetitivo e superficiale che ogni possibile riferimento a Il Signore degli Anelli è passato in secondo piano. Per 600 pagine i protagonisti si fanno sempre, sempre, sempre le stesse s**** mentali! Cavoli, che noia! Ma possibile che questi abbiano un cervello incapace di produrre pensieri diversi? Per non parlare poi tutta la gamma di aggettivi (da maligno ad agghiacciante, da nauseabondo a immane) usata per descrivere il Male in tutte le sue declinazioni e che - ovviamente - ottiene l'effetto contrario: il Signore degli Inganni non ha neanche un decimo della malvagità di Sauron e i Messaggeri del Teschio sembrano galline spennacchiate al confronto con i Nazgul.

Se prendi così tanto spunto da Il Signore degli Anelli, devi scrivere qualcosa che ne esalti ancora di più la bellezza, non che te lo faccia rimpiangere. ( )
