Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to like this book, I DNFed it at about 18%. It started off strong, but none of the characters or writing really resonated with me. I couldn't bring myself to care about what happened to any of the characters. Lots of cliches and tropes, and a lot of names to remember (so did GoT, but you actually cared about them). Could have been their names, or the way they spoke. Maybe it gets better later on, but with 30 books on my TBR shelf, I didn't want to spend another 500 pages finding out if it does.

Nothing against the writer, as he's obviously talented. I've heard great things about his Lightbringer series, and I will be checking that series out instead. ( )

This story was a bit slow going in the beginning, but once the 'education' began, the story moved along pretty quickly. There were a couple of good revelations and quite a bit of action in the last 1/4 of the book that it really kept the pace going and kept me reading until 2am. ( )

De weg van schaduw is het eerste deel van de serie Engelen van de nacht. Het boek gaat over Azoth, een kind dat opgroeit in de Wirwar, een zwaar criminele krottenwijk. Zonder ouders of andere mensen die op hem passen, komt hij in zeer gevaarlijke omstandigheden terecht. Geen wonder dat hij wil worden als Durzo Blint, een legendarische moordenaar. Durzo Blint is nergens bang voor en dat lijkt Azoth het hoogste goed. Na een dramatische gebeurtenis wordt hij het hulpje van Durzo Blint. Uiteindelijk blijkt Azoth een heel speciale jongen te zijn met een talent dat heel zeldzaam is. Maar om dat talent tevoorschijn te laten komen, moeten er heel wat dingen gebeuren.

Het uitgangspunt van dit boek is niet echt origineel. De leerjongen zijn van een crimineel is al vaker aan bod gekomen, evenals de volksjongen die iets heel speciaals blijkt te kunnen. Maar de uitwerking van het verhaal is gelukkig wel een stukje origineler dan het uitgangspunt. De wereld waarin Azoth opgroeit is een wrede wereld vol gevaren. Dat wordt mooi beschreven, hoewel er het hele boek door vele vragen overblijven. De vriendschap die Azoth sluit met een adellijke jongen laat ook de wat fraaiere kanten van Cenaria zien, het koninkrijk dat steeds vreest voor een inval van het naburige grote rijk. Er zit een grote vaart in het verhaal, waardoor het boek heerlijk vlot leest. Het magiegebruik is origineel genoeg om boeiend te zijn. De politieke verwikkelingen zijn echter hier en daar wat te ondoorzichtig en soms wat ongeloofwaardig. Gelukkig gebeuren er genoeg dingen om daar een beetje overheen te kunnen lezen. Al met al is het een veelbelovend eerste deel van een serie die ik graag verder zou willen lezen.

DNF. While I do enjoy more gritty fantasy at times, this one was just too misogynistic in how it treated the women close to the "main" character. And the plot gets convoluted and hard to follow at times. It might be for some, I'm not one of those. ( )

It took me a while to get into this and while I enjoyed it there were points that make me give it 3 stars instead of 4. The different lands and people felt like just names on a page rather than life life, and the names got thrown around so much that it just got confusing. Also some of the plot twists were just TOO twisty, to the point that they were cliche.

The mythology and world building was interesting and the characters compelling so I will be checking out the sequel at some point. ( )
