I actually preferred the first book in the Wheel of Time series over this one, and neither were that great to me. It seemed like after the adventures in the first one, the characters started over in this book (I see why it was suggested I skip #1). The story had a few interesting parts -- the alternate lines for instance -- but was a small reference in a larger story of mostly waiting around and moving places. ( )

A very good sequel further developing the adventures of Rand, Perrin, and Matt. New characters, and some favourite old ones or join them to I have a continuation adventure very similar to the first, yet exciting, gripping, and revealing. New enemies, with people that aren’t what they seem this is an excellent sequel to the first book. ( )

The Great Hunt is the sequel to Eye of the World, second book in Robert Jordan's epic series. The story continues to follow the protagonist Rand Al'Thor and his friends, as it introduces new characters and expands the story. Rand starts in Shienar, where the last book left off, training and preparing to go off on his own and keep the Aes Sedai away from him. But then dark friends invade, free the villain Fain, and steal the Horn of Valere along with Mat's very dangerous knife, and Rand, Perrin, Mat, and Loial go with a Shienarian military group to retrieve it.

There's an added story of a ship's captain and a group of Whitecloaks, neither of which really pay off. And there's a major new story of a mysterious invading force from across the sea, conquering parts of the west coast aided by strange beasts and women who can channel the One Power but who are essentially enslaved. The women of the first book (Nynaeve, Egwene, Min, and Elayne) get mixed up in this, and it all comes to a head in the finale.

I'm not sure I can manage 12 more volumes of this. The books are unnecessarily long- both so far have involved extensive travel around the continent, described in excruciating detail. It also bothers me that the main characters all seem to have Plot Armor, so it's hard to fear for anyone's safety. Part of this is tied to the conceit of the series, that there is a Pattern that is being woven, and that our heroes are just doing what they are meant to do by Destiny, as has been done in past turnings of the Wheel. Seems like there's a lack of free will then, which is uninteresting, but of course it also means nobody's part in the Pattern is going to be cut short by an arrow through the heart. I was also bothered by the strange appearance of a new character Selene, who is quite significant in the middle of the book but then disappears- I presume we'll see her again in a future volume.

On the plus side, Jordan is incredibly inventive. This world has magic bursting out of everywhere, much of it quite innovative and interesting. And he's not afraid to invent more characters at any time.
Maybe I'll limp along like this, liking the books well enough to start the next one, without committing whole heartedly. ( )

I believe that I have read this book twice before. I listened to it this time, and the recording is superb. Kate Reading and Michael Kramer perform excellently, and bring the characters out with different voices for most of the characters.

After this reading through, Verin and Nynaeve have become two of my favorite characters. When I first read the series, these characters annoyed me or I found them boring. Now, I find them very interesting.

There are several striking parts to this book that drew me in. Jordan does an excellent job of making me care about the characters and the perils that they go through. ( )

Of all the books in the series, the ending of this book is one of my favorites. For one, I actually remembered it (a lot of WOT stuff tends to get lost in space somewhere). Dead heroes coming back to fight for the Light, Rand fighting Balazamon in the sky for all to see, mounds of earth exploding and lightning flashing across the sky, Mat blowing the legendary Great Horn—a battle doesn't get much better than this.

I was very surprised to discover that the dramatic ending I looked forward to reading only took up a mere 50 pages, if that. By Jordan's standards, that's practically nothing.

In fact, most of the book was not really that exciting. Which is a shame, because it is all about the Great Hunt, a favorite gleeman tale—you would think that it would be more exciting. Then again, one of the common themes throughout WOT is that adventures aren't like the stories. Just lots of traveling and stuff. Ah, well. The ending still rocks.

I also was impressed with the way this novel is able to stand on its own. I could have picked it up on a whim with no WOT background and wouldn't have been very confused. It was kind of refreshing not being overloaded with information or being caught in a trap of "Is this something that I'm supposed to have remembered from the previous books?" Granted, this is only the second book in a monstrously huge series, but I appreciated the stand-aloneness all the same. ( )

And it shall come to pass that what men made shall be shattered, and the Shadow shall lie across the Pattern of the Age, and the Dark One shall once more lay his hand upon the world of man. Women shall weep and men quail as the nations of the earth are rent like rotting cloth. Neither shall anything stand nor abide... Yet one shall be born to face the Shadow, born once more as he was born before and shall be born again, time without end. The Dragon shall be Reborn, and there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth at his rebirth. In sackcloth and ashes shall he clothe the people, and he shall break the world again by his coming, tearing apart all ties that bind. Like the unfettered dawn shall he blind us, and burn us, yet shall the Dragon Reborn confront the Shadow at the Last Battle, and his blood shall give us the Light. Let tears flow, O ye people of the world. Weep for your salvation.

in the Year of Grace 231 of the New Era, the Third Age
And men cried out to the Creator, saying, O Light of the Heavens, Light of the World, let the Promised One be born of the mountain, according to the Prophecies, as he was in Ages past and will be in Ages to come. Let the Prince of the Morning sing to the land that green things will grow and the valleys give forth lambs. Let the arm of the Lord of the Dawn shelter us from the Dark, and the great sword of justice defend us. Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time.
