The sequel to Angela's Ashes. A really good read but doesn't quite measure up to the first book, which, literally, blew me away. ( )

Excellent. I don't often enjoy reading a second book by the same author, let alone a second memoir, but this is just as good as Angela's Ashes, in my opinion. Highly recommended but read Angela's Ashes first so you can understand his style, and pick up the story fairly quickly. ( )

El mismo espíritu apasionado e invencible que conmovió a millones de lectores con su anterior Las cenizas de Ángela . Un narrador en plenitud que rememora su periplo en pos del sueño americano poblado de soledad, humor y, sobre todo, de enorme sabiduría literaria y vital.

Knihu jsem zhltnul během tří dní, a už to svědčí o tom že mě i tohle pokračování dokonale dostalo. V první půlce nebo možná dvou třetinách člověk neustále trne, a vlastně se nemůže zbavit dojmu že Frank je takové nezkušené "telátko", stejně jako jím byl v Andělině popelu. Tohle se v nějakou chvíli podivuhodně zlomí a dojde vám, že jeho postřehy například o (nejen) tehdejším americkém školství jsou velmi přesné a jasnozřivé. A asi je třeba říci, že za obojí (nezkušenosti i přesné postřehy) "může" tenhle způsob spisování "se srdcem na dlani", kdy na sebe autor v podstatě všechno "vykecá". Nebojí se psát o svých nevědomostech, slabostech, pocitech méněcennosti, běsech, pádech, to všechno navíc s až neuvěřitelným sarkasmem, jímž navíc častuje především sám sebe... Ve druhém dílu je navíc dobře vidět, že autor zcela záměrně vynechává či bagatelizuje vlastní úspěchy, například pouhou jednou větou odbyde fakt že NYU nakonec úspěšně dokončil a tedy musel splnit i na počátku studia nastolené požadavky, což byl bezpochyby výsledek nikoli štěstí a náhody, ale především talentu a jistě i obrovské píle... Opět úžasná, nesmírně silná a současně moudrá kniha... Celkový dojem: 90% ( )

Frank McCourt's "Tis" is not a happy book. It starts with his re-entry into America and ends with his return to Ireland to place his mother's ashes--Angela's ashes.

The book travels through his difficulties with jobs, getting an education, and marriage.

It's a book about life when you are come from poverty and are trying to rise out of it. There is a lot of baggage that makes the playing field uneven.

He is a greater man to rise above it. Of course, you don't know that because you didn't read "Teacher Man." I highly recommend that book as well. ( )

Auch der zweite Teil von McCourts Autobiographie bewegt durch die Einfachheit der Darstellung. Ein Bild der amerikanischen Klassengesellschaft aus der Perspektive von unten wird entwickelt, wie es lebendiger nicht sein könnte. Das Buch lebt vom Einblick in die Gefühlswelt der "kleinen Leute" und ihre Strategien im Überlebenskampf. Es berührt durch die Erkenntnis, wie schwer es ist, Kindheit und Jugend abzuschütteln und neu zu beginnen.
