The last surviving victim of an experiment that implanted the subjects' heads with electrodes that decipher coded messages is the unnamed narrator. Half the chapters are set in Tokyo, where the narrator negotiates underground worlds populated by INKlings, dodges opponents of both sides of a raging high-tech infowar, and engages in an affair with a beautiful librarian with a gargantuan appetite. In alternating chapters he tries to reunite with his mind and his shadow, from which he has been severed by the grim, dark "replacement" consciousness implanted in him by a dotty neurophysiologist. Both worlds share the unearthly theme of unicorn skulls that moan and glow.… (més)

100 Years is Solitude meets Snow Crash. More fantasy/magical realism than sci-fi. 1985 vintage gives it a pass on the magical tech, but the Inklings in the real world? Not my cuppa. ( )

Didn't especially enjoy the ending, but then again, I didn't write it either. I did enjoy the dreamlike quality of the story and, breaking my own rules, I will probably search out and read other Haruki Murakami books. ( )

hmmm... ok... well, I'm done with this book. It was... interesting. 2 stories told in alternating chapters. One MOSTLY in the real-world, the other definitely not. Both stories told from the first person, and neither one named ANY of the characters. I imagine that reading this with your eyeballs would've been a bit confusing for quite a few chapters, trying to figure out if the guy is HERE or if he's THERE. I listened to the audiobook version, and they made the (IMO) wise choice of hiring 2 actors. The one for the "real" world sounded like a harried, young man, while the reader of the fantasy world sounded maybe only a little older, but had a much calmer demeanor. They were both, in fact, well-cast.

But the story itself... well, some of the explanations went way above my head - either I wasn't smart enough to follow them (admittedly a possibility), or else they were such nonsense that you just had to shake your head and BELIEVE that it's supposed to make sense, somehow. (I think that this is much more likely).

I have a couple of other Murakami books on tap. I'll probably read them, but I'm not in a big hurry at this moment - I need to read something a little less brain-melting. ( )

A wonderful weird novel by a master writer. As seeing Mr. Murakami is one of my favorite authors, I’m happy I finally got around to this one.

In this story we have two different timelines. We have an unnamed narrator who’s working for the system setting up with a task involving a company and INKlings. He meets this girl and after he performs a task for someone who calls himself the professor all sort of weird things happens. The other narrative is from the perspective of a “dreamreader” he’s in this town that has a wall around it. He’s separated from his shadow and gets a job in the library as a dreamreader.

As usually a book by Haruki Murakami is weird. Most of the time you have no idea what is going on. I say this meaning it in a good way. This is my 8th Murakami and so far, I loved almost all of them, with this one being no exception. The different narrations were really interesting and I kept waiting for them to make sense as to why they were in this same book. As per usual you don’t really get a straight answer to this. I think that’s one of the biggest parts why I like his books so much. It feels like you get a glimpse into someone’s life with no real beginning or ending just like you would in the real world. Of course, this had its problems, like all books by Murakami I’m not 100% into the way female characters are described. It’s a bit too sexualized for me. Having said that, the way he can describe a scene or someone’s thought is just beautiful and I can’t wait for more of his books.

If you’re a Murakami lover you’ll likely like this as well. If you are into weird novels that don’t make a lot of sense but are beautifully written? You have to pick up his work.

He has become the foremost representatives of a new style of Japanese writing: hip, cynical and highly stylized, set at the juncture of cyberpunk, postmodernism, and hard-boiled detective fiction.... Murakami [is] adept at deadpan wit, outrageous style.

Murakami's bold willingness to go straight over the top [is] a signal indication of his genius... a world-class writer who has both eyes open and takes big risks.

The elevator continued its impossibly slow ascent.
