A family read-aloud binge of picture books for my daughter's 21st birthday!

I'm a sucker for stories where an individual's dedication and perseverance causes big changes in the life of another. In this case it's a librarian on horseback and a reluctant reader deep in the Appalachians.

This picture book is a much better tribute to the Pack Horse Library Project than the dreadful and melodramatic novel I previously read called The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek. ( )

That Book Woman is inspired by the true work of Pack Horse Librarians who were usually women who would deliver books to very remote regions to help educate people who lived in the mountains. The book is based on a wonderful concept, however the dialect can be a little hard for readers to understand which is why I would say that this is an intermediate book. I think this book could be a great way to introduce some history into the classroom, especially a story about women that is not really known.

Cal and his sister Lark live in the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky in the 1930s. Lark loves to read, whereas Cal prefers helping his father with chores. Cal is skeptical of Lark's reading until a woman on horseback begins traveling up the mountain, through all kinds of weather, to bring books to their family. Cal's admiration for "that book woman's" courage convinces him that books must be important after all, and he decides to learn to read. This book is inspired by the Pack Horse Librarians, women who travelled throughout Appalachia on horseback, delivering books to people who lived in isolated areas and could not attend school. It honors these women for their courageousness and generosity. Henson does an excellent job of capturing Cal's voice by writing in 1930s Kentucky dialect. The illustrations are beautiful. I would highly recommend this book. ( )

That Book Woman by heather Henson, A 40 page child's picture book about the Pack Horse Librarians of Kentucky during the 1930's formed by WPA to bring books, printed resources to the isolated areas where there were few schools and most all citizens lived in abject poverty working hard for a roof over their heads and simple and gathered food for their stomachs.

This is the story of young Ca, who by watching the kindness, dedication and sacrifices of their pack horse librarian becomes inspired to learn to read. It is simply but beautifully illustrated and told using a bit of a dialect. It is charming and a great beginning for children to realize the hardships that others endure.

It can be used to help motivate literacy while recognizing the service of these women trailblazers. I give it a 4 star rating. ( )
