This is a completely revised and enlarged edition of A Turkish-English Dictionary by H.C. Hony and Fair I?z (second edition. Oxford. 1957) with all entries (headwords, affixes, and abbreviations) set out according to a unified, strictly alphabetical order. Its scope has been altered by the omission of many Arabic and Persian loan-words no longer widely used, together with the aides to pronunciation for these. Their place has been taken by the many loan-words (mainly in the field of science) from western European languages, especially where their Turkish forms are not immediately recognizable to English-speaking readers.
The greatest change is in the treatment of the Turkish vocabulary, providing an extensive survey of modern idiomatic constructions in a more accessible form than previously. The main entry is followed by sub-entries for the inflected forms and a separate entry for the compound forms. With few exceptions all idioms are given under the first word of the phrase, and general numerical idioms have been grouped under beg and kirk. Further, many neologisms of the last thirty years have been included; it is felt that, although some Turks consider them a mixed blessing, they have come to stay; they will moreover act as a guide when interpreting other neologisms. The spellings adopted are in accordance with the latest (1977) rules of the Turkish Linguistic Society (Tu?rk Dil Kurumu), with indication of accepted variant spellings. A complete innovation is the introduction of a system of cross-references to the appropriate sections of G. L. Lewis, Turkish Grammar (Oxford, 1967) for all headwords and affixes of special grammatical significance. - Dust jacket. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
