Lane takes a mildly rhetorical-critical approach to Mark's Gospel (setting it against the Neronian persecution in Rome), and is abreast of the scholarship of his day while remaining evangelical in approach. This commentary helped the Gospel of Mark become more to me than the "Summary Gospel", and was a constant companion when I preached a series of sermons on it. Using redaction criticism as a hermeneutical approach for understanding the text and the intention of the evangelist, Lane considers the Gospel of Mark as a total literary work and describes Mark's creative role in shaping the Gospel tradition and in exercising a conscious theological purpose.
