This entertaining story would be delightful for children of any age. Even young children, if correctly guided, will discover with delight the telltale scratch on Grandfather Panda that shows he is really Bao Bao, all grown up. The story within a story draws us in with engaging text and delightful pictures that surround the text. Author and illustrator Renata Liwska has done an excellent job drawing lifelike panda bears (one of her favorite subjects), and children will find the characters as adorable as they are amusing. The theme is consistent throughout the story – listen to your elders for important lessons that may one day save your life. Bao Bao keeps himself safe by remembering his mother’s advice. Likewise, Grandfather Panda continues the cycle of life by imparting the same information to his grandson.

Susan says: This book includes the story-within-a-story device, and it works pretty well in this book. The framing story has a different font type and size, so it is noticeable. Also there are different names for the two different sets of pandas. Grandfather Panda is the one telling the story, and the story within includes lots of details about panda life and their habits. The story also has a humorous surprise. The pictures are pastel colored, and done with pencil. The pandas are cute and cuddly, but also factually correct. Nice book. ( )
