( ) Starlight the chicken wants to be a famous model. The other barnyard animals laugh at her until her fairy godmother appears and tells Starlight that she'll grant her wishes. Starlight is to lay an egg and her wish will come true. When she gets to Paris to be a model, the people laugh at her and make her want to return home. When she gets home she continues to wish for things by laying eggs but her fairy godmother has retired and left. Starlight is left laying eggs that turn into lots of different things. Seem like a random story? That's how I felt. It provides no conclusion and appears to be a random string of events. The sentences are too brief and include too many idioms for kids to find funny. I do not recommend this book. When an out-of-place chicken is given a chance at escaping from her dull, monotonous life – in favor of the far grander pursuit of what she hopes will be a high fashion model career – she takes it in an instance. Harry Allard's droll wit and irreverent voice is never better, and with New Yorker contributor George Booth's clever sketches, "Starlight Goes to Town" is a delightfully absurd romp that truly tickles the brain. you never know where it's going to go, and yet it absolutely seems right when it goes there – after all, what starry-eyed chicken doesn't deserve an adventure like this?
