Deaf Holly Summers uses her talent for lip-reading to help the Portland Police investigate a string of missing women until her daughter becomes the target of horror by a workplace enemy in this thrilling novel by bestselling author Graham Masterton. There are no words... Holly Summers is deaf, but she "hears" thanks to her immense talent for lip-reading. A child welfare officer, Holly moonlights for the Portland, Oregon, police, using her unique gift to aid in criminal investigations -- including one into the case of a recent string of women who have vanished without a trace. There is no sound... Witnessing unimaginable evil in the abuse cases she handles, Holly fights every day to salvage broken young lives. ( )

Way above average. Entertaining fast read, perfect for a plane, but with the grim quality of Japanese horror.

IMHO this author is one of the best in horror fiction. His books are nightmarish, shocking and scary.

Of late Masterton is turning out light reads, both in terms of horror and in genre. There are still American Indian references, yet the usual bone-chilling terror is not present. This said however, Unspeakable does not follow any expected paths; it's unpredictable, wily and at times quite shocking. When the central protagonist of the tale is deaf, you should know that Masterton is using that a vehicle to create scenarios that will unnerve you, and he does this, not consistently, but enough to remind you that he has the book has the potential to be nasty if it needed to be. That is the crux. Unspeakable is not a horror book, yet a dark and unsettling tale of the horror in our world, the danger we pose to our children , and with only a faint supernatural background. It'll grab your interest, and fill a few hours (it's only a short book) and is a worthy addition to your Masterton library, but it's not strictly horror. ( )

As my first Masterton read, I was both impressed with the breakneck speed of the story and the ending (the extreme ending, last chapter, last page). However, I felt the characters were somewhat lacking and that the story was rough at times. At other times I was wondering where the story was going as it seemed to drift off in a direction it was not meant to go, only to come back towards the end of the book.
One aspect of Masterton I highly enjoyed was his writing of action sequences and his portrayal of the abuses on the children. Both of these aspects were well written and the details of what happened to some of the children made me both cringe and fret with anger at the parents in the book.
I do see this book as a good attempt at genre crossing as it is both a murder mystery and a supernatural horror story. I find the cross over rough at times, but because of the great speed at which the story moves and because Masterton made me want to know what was going to happen next, I found the book to be a fun read.
