Apunta't a LibraryThing per saber si aquest llibre et pot agradar. No hi ha cap discussió a Converses sobre aquesta obra. It was okay. Very interesting in the beginning, not so much later on. But I do have a thing for 'ancient' history more than for recent history, so that makes sense. Fun read, still. ( ) A superb condensed and chronological history of the world. Geography of a fine calibre! A delight for anyone with an interest in the world and our future. It includes some useful summary tables and it filled one or two gaps in my knowledge of what went on. I like books that have websites too: http://www.whatonearthhappened.com/ It is on a par with Bill Bryson's book 'A short History of Nearly Everything': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Short_History_of_Nearly_Everything (For the illustrated hardcover version) This book is a complete history of the world, starting out with the Big Bang, plate tectonics, evolution of life and the appearance of man. Then it describes human history, ending with today. Of course it are very broad descriptions, they would have to be since they cover such a long period, but it still helps you understand links between events. Also nice is that the book is not overly western history focussed, it also includes the other parts of the world. The illustrations are really nice, they really complete the story. Also nice are the colored sidelines that keep track of the 24 hour clock that history is projected on. A recommended book if you want a general overview of what happened in the world. In What on Earth Happened?, Christopher Lloyd tells our story from the very beginning of time to the present day, taking giant narrative leaps across millennia and continents. Along the way, he explains exactly how Muslim conquest gave Spain its paella, how the Earth's collision with another young planet created the moon, how dragonflies the size of seagulls emerged out of the prehistoric waters, and how the Big Bang can be detected in your television. Accessible and endlessly entertaining, this massive book draws on disciplines as wide-ranging as astrophysics and anthropology and will appeal to experts, amateur enthusiasts and the simply curious alike. Completed by 250 colourful photographs, maps, historic paintings, engravings and specially commissioned illustrations, What on Earth Happened? takes an entertaining and informed sideways look at the last 13.7 billion years in the life of our universe.
